Exclamation NHL 2K11 Still Alive???

After the recent speculation that 2K Sports was going to ditch their hockey interest for the 2K11 video game sports season, there might be a glimmer of hope somewhere in a recent post over at 2khockey.net.

We Want The Cup, a 2K developer weighed in on a debate regarding unrealistic shooting mechanics in a user's highlight reel... Here's what he said:

I want to chime in on the one timer goal. The play was nice, the pass was nice, and the animation was nice. The only problem is that the player should have augmented a little toward the goal. Yes, this is a problem within the game, which by the way has nothing to do with the r-stick shooting (although the same problem does exist when you stickhandle and then shoot). But it doesn't give any advantage or disadvantage to a CPU goalie, as the puck is shot from exactly where it should be shot from. Only the player angle is off by about 45 degrees, maybe even 90.

What I mean to say is, nice goal. Doesn't end up looking like it should have, but that's not the fault of the player, it is the fault of the game.

That player was on the off-wing and in proper position. Definitely something we will try and fix, although admittedly it is hard to make it perfect in EVERY scenario. Depending on how early or late you press the shot button can determine how accurately the player will augment. You see it in both NHL games. It's not a perfect world hehe.

Could just mean a patch, but I like to be optimistic at times as well. This would be nice.

I don't doubt the development team is working on NHL 2K11. Whether it will see release, remains to be seen. It was the same situation with NFL 2K9. The team was in the process of developing the game, but a couple of months or so before the game was to be released, the plug was pulled. I really hope that doesn't happen here, as I believe the series is finally back on the right track, but I won't be suprised if it does.

Re: NHL 2K11 Still Alive???

which takes me off topic a bit but....could you imagine that somewhere out there exists some sort of 2K(9?) Football code locked away somewhere on some hardrive that none of us will ever play??

I get shivers just thinking about how much more polished, playable and fun that game might actually be......it exists somewhere and its probably completely playable just missing the final stages of polish

aaaghh!

As for 2K Hockey, I just spent the last 2 nights playing 2K8 and have to say, with the sliders adjusted right and the speed set down to 0 (yes 0) The skating & gameplay is awfully natural looking and feels really smooth. I think the goalies reacted much more lifelike and created realistic opportunities to punch it in. While I do with some of the AI gripes about defensive positioning and such, I think the 2K team would have much more success building their next game off of this engine.

The player movements flow so much better and give you that video game feel as well as maintaining a very deep simulation engine underneath. I forgot how much individuality and skill was given to each of the players. Open up a player profile and you will see attributes and ratings in categories that are no longer even present in 2K10. I think all these missing attributes is what gave each of these players such subtle distinctions to their behaviors and performances. Thus, even creating a more dynamic experience for the player

I would love to see 2K11 to be some sort of hybrid between 2K10 and 2K8 taking ingredients from the best of both games. The realistic physics integration alone in both games so far advanced in comparison to what you have in EA's scripted motion captured gameplay. I dont understand how most gamers dont see this immediately.

I don't put too much stock into his comment...it sounds more to be like a pre-programmed response to an issue that is brought up. And like savoie06 mentioned, they probably are working on the next version --- until the higher-ups come in and pull the plug and assign them to another game.

The fact that no one involved with 2k is coming out and saying there will be an NHL 2k11 speaks volumes.

games get shut down while being developed all the time.

It also speaks volume that no one has really said it is OFFICIAL that there will be no NHL2K11.

Re: NHL 2K11 Still Alive???

I was t there was going to not be a second patch. They told me they were working on other things. At least that is what Ronnie Email made when I asked what the update meant on his Twiter page.

This is what he email me.
I meant a roster update. Unlikely there will be another patch as the team is underway with their normal this-time-of-year projects

I still say it is 50/50, but you never know.
