Lead Us to the Promised Land - Keno Davis Dynasty

Providence Friars Season Preview
Kevin McNamara
Providence Journal

With a young team, Friar fans should not expect to much out of the team this year. With only three players returning who had playing time for last years NIT team, the inexperience should catch up to them.

The Friars are led by Senior Sharaud Curry and Junior Marshon Brooks, both players who played strong last year and have been known around the Big East for their dominate play. Senior Brian McKenzie is the only other player who saw significant players last year, and the Friars will need his 3 point shooting to help the team this season.

Lets meet the rest of the Friars in depth chart format.

PG 1- Sharaud Curry

PG 2- Vincent Council
This freshman is poised to be the starter next season, so expect a significant role from him off the bench.

PG 3- Johnny Lacy
Another freshman from Massachusetts who provides depth at the guard position.

SG 1- Brian McKenzie

SG 2- Duke Mondy
This freshman from Michigan is known for his deep and accurate shooting.

SF 1- Marshon Brooks

SF 2- Kyle Wright
The freshman from Connecticut is also known for his range and length.
Spoiler

PF 1- Greedy Peterson
The redshirt-sophomore from New York has range and athleticism that should greatly help the Friars.

PF 2- James Still
This freshman is a little undersized for the position, so is a candidate to be redshirted.

PF 3- Kadeem Batts
Has been redshirted for the season.

C 1- Bilal Dixon
This undersized redshirt-Freshman center will be important to the success of the Friars.

C 2- Russ Permenter
This junior JUCO transfer will help give the Friars some added depth

C 3- Ray Hall
The senior has been injured for the past year and a half, but might be able to give the team a few minutes off the bench every now and again.

Height and inexperience might be the downfall of this team, but they should most certainly be fun to watch. A few years down the road, hopefully Coach Keno Davis will have a team that can bring us a National Championship.

Note: I'm gonna try to keep my recaps simple or else getting through several years will be difficult to do.

Bucknell
November 14th, 2009

On opening night for the Friars, Bucknell walked into a bee hive and left the Dunkin Donuts side with an 83-62 defeat.

The Friars trailed early but once they hit stride they never looked back. They were led by Marshon Brooks 31 points, and Jamine Peterson added 21.

Patrick Behen led Bucknell with 20 points in the loss.

The Friars start the season 1-0, while Bucknell fell to 1-1.

The Friars next face Mercer (0-1). Mercer is led by All-American candidate James Florence (22 PPG).

Mercer (November 15th, 2009)

Although it was a rather close game throughout, the Mercer Bears just were not strong enough to compete with the Friars, falling 72-58 in Providence.

Marshon Brooks led the Friars and all scorers with 25 points and Greedy Peterson added 12 points and 8 rebounds, while Bilal Dixon grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds.

James Florence led Mercer with 14 points.

The Friars (2-0) next travel to Alabama on Friday to take on the Crimson Tide (2-0).

November 20th, 2009

Despite giving up an 10 point lead early in the first half, the Friars went into cruise control and handed the Crimson Tide their first loss on Friday, 87-67.

Marshon Brooks led all scorers with 42 points, while Greedy Peterson added 17 and Sharaud Curry had 14 points and 13 assists.

Alabama was paced by the 18 points from senior guard Mikhail Torrance.

Vermont, currently at 2-0, comes to the Dunk next Tuesday to take on the Friars. Tip-off at 7.

Vermont
November 24th, 2009

The Catamounts came into Providence looking for an upset, but instead got destroyed by a very strong Friars team, 79-54.

Marshon Brooks led the Friars with 29 points, and Brian McKenzie added 16 for the home team.

Marquis Blakely led Vermont with 20 points and 19 rebounds and 5 blocks in the loss.

The Friars (4-0) next take on the Boston College Eagles (#24, 2-1) on Saturday. This will be a good test early in the season for this young Friars team.
