First Person: Blake Travis Parker
Ever since I was a small child, still crawling and barely able to speak, I have bled red and gold from every pore on my body. From Joe Cool, "The Catch" and Super Bowl rings to blank faces, disappointment and the utterance of every single curse word in the book, my family and I have always been loyal San Fransisco 49'ers fans.
Ah yes, so many wasted sunday afternoons spent starring blankly at our TV across from our living room couch, watching the 'niners, eating take out, fast food or frozen pizzas all the while sipping Dr. pepper. So many memories of victory... not so much agony over defeat.
And yet, somehow, my faith in the bay bombers have been dwindling in the past few years, wilting away with growing frustration. With glimmer's of hope, though. Ever since the 2007 season, they have begun to show much more promise.
I Find myself listening every day to the radio, listening for the analysis of each game as though it were some sort of ritual, ever since my days of playing for the Miami Hurricanes a few years back. During my tenure, actually no... the whole point to go there was to see if my dreams of playing for the 'niners would ever come true. That, and getting a masters degree in business. *wink* I realized during my senior season at safety that my dreams had been smashed, along with my knee in several places and my ACL.
The doctor told me I was lucky to still be able to walk on that leg, and also told me I would never play again. Heart broken, I left The U.
Then the day came:
"...and as such, Mike will remain assistant head coach of the San Fransisco 49'ers. Meanwhile, effective as of today; January 21'st', general manager of football operations Scot McCloughan will not be contracted under the 49'ers organization."
I couldn't believe my ears. I remember slamming on the breaks in the middle of traffic, pulling over to the side, and dumbly sit there with my mouth gapped open.
Sure, the team had done poorly at the start of the season, but Singletary had turned that team around and seemed, at least to me, be a good fit within that locker room.
I turned off the radio, and looked up into the beautiful Tampa night. Then turned on the engine, and rode home.
Several weeks later, I was called up out of the blue.
"Blake Travis Parker?"
Not knowing who it was, I dumbly answered.
"Um... yea?"
"This is Jed York, team president of the San Fransisco 49'ers. We would like to talk to you about your application for the vacant head coaching position within the organization."
My mind went numb.
