I know nothing about soccer. Would you recommend this game?

I've been wanting to try a soccer game for awhile and I've heard that the Fifa series has been great for sometime. However, I know nothing about soccer at all. I don't know the rules, teams or players really. Would I still enjoy this game? Is the gameplay fun and addicting enough that once I would still like it without knowing the players/teams? Also, does the game have any sort of tutorial or things that can help teach me the nuances of the game?

Really thinking about picking this game up...

Man, you got interested after you saw that it was the only game I was playing on consistent basis.

I think games like FIFA do a good job of introducing you to the game that it tries to replicate. The gameplay is so addicting that it makes you want to learn more about the sport itself, the players, the teams, and the leagues. I introduced a friend of mine to FIFA 2008. Two years later he has a found a team to follow, knows about players from all over the world, and knows about all the different leagues.

I think FIFA does have tutorials, but I'm not entirely sure.

Future420,

If I were you I would stay clear of this game.

If you don't know football/soccer you are going to be frustrated and confused by the gameplay and you won't enjoy the player details and team licensing like most people.

Total waste of your money.

I mean, assuming you play Madden or NBA...would you recommend Madden/NBA to someone who doesn't even know the rules or players?? Nahhh.

Really?

How is one supposed to learn?

I learned the rules of hockey from playing the video games, and now I have a partial ST package for the CBJ. I love watching hockey now.

Video games are a great gateway to get into a sport. If he's shown interest in the sport, I don't see how getting the game can hurt.

YES, BUY THE GAME.

I've always sort of been interested in soccer, but it wasn't until I watched this year's UEFA Champions League final between Barcelona and Man U that I really got hooked. I bought FIFA 09, have played the living crap out of it, and now purchased Fox Soccer Channel and am a huge soccer fan. It was a little frustrating at first, getting to know the game and positions and whatnot, but I got used to it.

PM me if you have any questions. I think I was in the exact same situation that you were in.

Go for it!

I don’t know if there is a better introduction to a sport than a good video game. Over the years Madden has taught me a lot about football and though I was already a huge soccer fan soccer video games have really expanded my knowledge of teams and players.

I would also second the post about learning a lot about hockey from the NHL series. I have little to know interest in hockey, but I’ve always found the video game entertaining and by extension my appreciation of the real thing has grown.
