Any way to reduce a player's bonus?

Ok, I accidentally shot myself in the foot by resigning Shawne Merrimen to a huge contract (I moved him to DE where he's a 99 OVR) and now he's eating up a huge chunk of my salary cap and he's got a $32M signing bonus over 6 years.

A year later, he's eating up even more of my salary cap and I was hoping to find a way to trade him away because now I have 4-5 good young DEs and I wanted to use some of the other ones. However, if I do trade him it's going to incur a $26M cap penalty. I tried to change his position (should have done that the first time around), but even if I make him a Kicker and try and resign him he still gets a $32M signing bonus.

Is there any way I can lower his signing bonus, or eliminate cap penalties? I'll go search and see if there are ways to eliminate cap penalties since there have been a few topics on it.

Nope. Bonus is stuck. Wait until there are 1 or 2 years left in the deal and dump him. Very realistic scenario.

dang... sadly there are currently 5 years left on the deal and I'm rapidly running out of cap room. Well, we'll see how things go. Luckily Luis Castillo ($11M in cap room) and several others who are each eating up $7-8M are on thier contract year this year. Hopefully I'll be able to replace some of them through the draft and release them.

You can cheat your cap but thats about it. You won't be able to fix the Merrimen contract though. Next time you have to resign someone change their position to P and they will sign for cheap. I did that with Zach Miller and Thomas Howard because my Nnamdi, Seymour, Russell, DMc, Gallery contracts are huge and wouldn't let me resign my younger up and coming guys. Gonna have to dump Gallery and Russell soon because their numbers are huge.

Sometimes you can resign a guywith a huge contract, but no signing bonus. Just take the total amount all the way up, the reduce the salary cap. I have had some guys sign this way.

When you try to play your first preseason game and your team is still over the cap with required spots to fill, it should ask you if you want to clear cap penalties.

If you have enough cap space (and when i say enough it might mean about $30 million free) you can resign him to a 1 year deal at the end of the year. It will make his salary shoot up to an insane amount but once you advance into the off-season you can resign him with the contract you want.
If you aren't really sure what I'm talking about click the link in my signature that says "managing the salary cap" and it's explained pretty well there.
