Official 2010 FIBA World Championship Thread

Who knew that we haven't won the gold medal since 1994?

From Greece 1998, 3rd place finish: Seems as if the squad had all collegiates, which I was not previously aware of: Trajan Langdon, Wendell Alexis, Michael Hawkins, Brad Miller, Bill Edwards, Ashraf Amaya, Jimmy Oliver, Gerard King, Kiwane Garris, Jason Sasser, Jimmy King, David Wood (Coach: Rudy Tomjanovich)

Winner: Yugoslavia

From Indiana 2002, 6th place finish, first time NBA defeated in international play: Ray Allen, Baron Davis, Andre Miller, Mike Finley, Reggie Miller at guard, Shawn Marion, Elton Brand, Paul Pierce, Antonio Davis at forward, and Ben Wallace, Jermaine O'Neal, Raef LaFrentz at center. The alternates were Nick Collison and Jay Williams. The head coach was George Karl, with assistants Greg Popovich, Mike Montgomery and Kelvin Sampson.

Winner: Yugoslavia

2002 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYER AWARDS:

MVP: Dirk Nowitzki (Germany)

ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM:
G: Manu Ginobili (Argentina)
G: Predrag Stojakovic (Yugoslavia)
C: Yao Ming (China)
F: Dirk Nowitzki (Germany)
F: Pero Cameron (New Zealand)

^^ NO USA players LOL

From Japan 2006, 3rd place finish: Joe Johnson, Kirk Hinrich, LeBron James, Antawn Jamison, Shane Battier, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, Brad Miller, Elton Brand, Carmelo Anthony, Head coach: Mike Krzyzewski

Winner: Spain

All-tournament team 2006:

Spain Pau Gasol
Spain Jorge Garbajosa
United States Carmelo Anthony
Argentina Manu Ginóbili
Greece Theodoros Papaloukas

REDEMPTION part II in Turkey 2010! Getting that Gold 16 years later!

Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams are confirmed. Plenty more are expected to return.

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/09/29/c...championships/

Colangelo told FanHouse earlier this month that seven players from the Olympic team -- Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and Deron Williams -- told him at last February's All-Star Game in Phoenix that they would play in Turkey. Colangelo, though, still plans to double check this fall with those players to make sure they are on board.

Follow NBA FanHouse Williams has confirmed to the media he will return. And, although James hasn't made a public statement, Anthony has little doubt he will play.

Anthony, who is good friends with James, said he believes James has already decided to return. If there is any doubt, Anthony said, "I'll get him to come back".

Re: Official 2010 FIBA World Championship Thread

USA and Brazil are the only teams to play in all 15 World Championship tournaments. New to the tourney is the nation of Tunisia, Iran, and Jordan.

I personally cannot wait to watch this, if I can. I wanna check out how Hamed Ehadadi does for Iran, and Mohammadsamad Nikkhah. Dude can drain em. Iran is incredibly undersized though.

Oh yeah, GO USA!

Re: Official 2010 FIBA World Championship Thread

I expect them to add Kevin Durant, Brandon Roy, Al Jefferson and another big.. maybe Brook Lopez/Amare/Tyson Chandler/Meka Okafor

What a team that would be

CP3/Williams
Kobe/Wade/Roy
Melo/Durant
LBJ/Jefferson
Howard/Bosh/Chandler

2006 loss to Greece was a fluke, even though we Greeks (better yet, the completely ignorant and anti-American Greeks) like to regard it as clear indication that Greeks are better at basketball than Americans (...)

The main reason for the loss was the obviously bad preparation of Team USA in regards to the different FIBA bball style, the fact that it had little time to gel together as a team and the clear underestimation of its opponents..

However, I expect Team USA to dominate in 2010, as the only real threat to a roster of its caliber will be Spain

I'd like to note that good preparation is essential for a successful basketball team. Noone was onboard for success in 2006. Kinda sad. But I'm kinda happy it happened to Coach K. Hate that guy.
