Shifting the Chargers from a 3-4 to a 4-3

Hey, I want to start a Franchise with the Chargers, but I want to use a 4-3 defense instead of the Chargers' 3-4, so I was looking for some suggestions on what to do.

So far I've thought of moving Shawne Merriman to RE to pass rush, and moving Luis Castillo to LE. I would also need to pick up another decent DT in FA or the draft after the first season.

Also, I was thinking of trading Quentin Jammer for a younger, talented CB... maybe one of the Cowboys young CBs (Mike Jenkins/Orlando Scandrick). Is there anything else I should look to do in switching to a 4-3 defense? or any moves I should look to make on offense?

Merriman and English as DE
Castillo and Jamal at DT
Phillips and Burnett as OLB
Cooper as ILB

i like to keep them fresh though so during passing downs i have Jamal and Castillo out and replaced with either Alphonso Boone, Travis Johnson and Jaques Cesaire.

Re: Shifting the Chargers from a 3-4 to a 4-3

Having Castillo at DT is a wonderful move. That's what I'm trying to do in my franchise. What happened to Jamal Williams in yours though? Did he retire? Or did you trade/release him? (I had to trade him for some draft picks because he wanted too much money, and at his age? NAHHHH, same thing with LT but ay, you gotta do what you gotta do) Don't trade Jammer though. He's a great corner and his coverage and awareness (i'm pretty sure) will still increase to be all in the high 90s like his press ability.

Here's what I would do: I'd put both shaw(u)ns in your front 4 though.Because then you'd have a 99 overall line (excluding your second DT). Then I would draft some linebackers and a second DT (if you can't get one during the season). I would try to trade some players around (not Jammer, trust me) to get at least 2 2nd or 3rd round picks. Then, use your first round pick for a MLB, your second for a ROLB, your second second (or first 3rd) for a DT with good potential (you also want him to have good power moves and at least 300 lbs. on him to help out the new smaller, albeit skillful, DEs) Then focus on a new SS and some depth at corner and your D should be in great condition. Or, you could draft 2 corners and put Jammer at SS (since he can tackle pretty well). Cromartie and Cason both have A potential and should be well in the 90s overall by year 2. Get Jammer as a SS to check any slot threat or TE and you can get into some more blitz packages. And then if you're able to draft some CBs with at least B potential, you're looking at a mean Secondary, and a VERY mean Front 4 if not -- 7. You'll be locking people down left and right.

If you start with default rosters and if the very first thing you do is go to the trade screen on your franchise you can completely rip off the Seahawks and trade Jamal Williams for Aaron Curry, Lofa Tatupa, and Marcus Trufant. You will have to add some random scrub so the Chargers don't go over 55 max players but it's an insane deal.
