Question About Potential

on the blog it said that a player's potential rating is something he cannot exceed.
if i take a backup QB (who i presume won't have a high potential rating) and break all records etc for several seasons in a row... will his rating still be stuck that low?

Yes, if you are using a backup who has low potential. However if you have a guy like cassell who in head coach they gave a 90 potential rating then he can improve. It really makes a requirement to draft smarter and helps to make decisions about who to keep as backups more important.

alright but what if cassel performs better than a 90 overall consistently?
it may be unlikely but it could happen.

also i was reading the feedback thread on the franchise blog... are there going to be draft classes with real faces (or at least computer generated ones like in MVP) instead of those silhouettes?

In head coach they had CPU generated ones with the premade classes so I would until I hear otherwise assume the same will be true in madden.

Second, a player does not play above his ratings. He might play better than other players with identical ratings but his ratings in combination with his surroundings and the user controlling him were used to create whatever production he had. The only true judge of what a player should produce given ratings and situation is what that player produces in that situation with those ratings so he will never perform above that.

Re: Question About Potential

This is a great thread. I agree with this question. Lets say we take an example of Tashard Choice.

(This is made up)
TC- Ovl rating is 74....pot rating 85. Choice is 24 years old
What if Barber and Felix got injured and he carries the load for the next 3 years.
His stats read
2009: 360 carries 1700 yards 10 TDs
2010: 310 carries 1645 yards 13 TDs
2011: 340 carries 1462 yards 11 TDs

Now reading stats like this you would think of LT or AP both who are rated in the 90's. Shouldn't a player who plays like this deserve to be rated among the other greats?

One more thing...I think the potential rating should change every year. If a player out performs his rating than the potential should increase too or decrease

Ex: Tashard Choice 74 ovl. 85 potential.
2009: 360 carries 1700 yards 10 TDs
Progression after season: TChoice increase to 80 ovl. potential increase to 88

Potential could increase by half of what the ovl increase is. This would work the exact same way if a player decreases.

What do you think?

Re: Question About Potential

If he is performing well for me, well I don't care what the game says his OVR is, but I see your points.

Great point here. He already has the stats to put up those numbers. Why should he improve for putting up numbers that he already has the ratings to put up?

I also agree with this ... if my player is performing at a level I'm happy with, I really don't care what his rating is? Having said that, I wouldn't expect a 74 rated RB to tear it up like Adrian Peterson?
