Julian Peterson now a Lion

The Seattle Seahawks have traded LB Julian Peterson to the Detroit Lions for DT Cory Redding and a 2009 fifth-round draft choice, NFL.com’s Steve Wyche has confirmed.

Peterson, who has made five Pro Bowls, including the past three, has started every game but one over the last three seasons for Seattle after spending six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He has 46 sacks and eight interceptions over his nine-year career.

Redding played in 13 games for the Lions in 2008 before a knee injury forced him the miss the final three games of the season. He had 38 tackles and three sacks last year, and for his career has 16 sacks and 200 tackles.

The trade was first reported by foxsports.com.
This is huge for the Lions as I was severely worried what we were going to do beyond Simms....plus, no more overpaid and underperforming Cory Redding!

Unfortunately, that's exactly how I would describe Peterson. 4 more years on a $54m contract for a 30 year old declining OLB who part times as an end in passing situations and had trouble getting any pressure last year. Name recognition was the only reason he was an All-Pro last year. Hopefully he's able to bounce back for the Lions.

I'm happy to see Redding re-structured his contract for the deal. This probably freed up about $2m in space for Seattle and gets them their 5th round pick back. I would like them to lock up Leroy Hill long term since he's the best LB they've had the last couple years and can potentially move back over to the weak side. He was a monster there for them his rookie year, but Peterson's lack of pass coverage skills forced them to move Hill over.

Poor Julian,...what an unlucky bastard to be traded to the Lions.

I like the move from the Seahawks perspective. It allows for a lot of flexibility in the draft. I wasn't too much in love with BJ Raji, so adding Redding and Cole negates them taking Raji. If Curry falls to them (doubtful), they would have a great LB corps. Or they could go for OL help with Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe. And then Crabtree is still a possibility.

It'll be interesting to see how Leroy Hill's role will change now. He had 7.5 sacks as a rookie, before Peterson signed.

Happy to get him out of the NFC West. Absolute Niner killer after he left!
