St. Francis University named Hal Radebaugh today to sit at the helm of the Red Flash men's basketball team. Radebaugh, who recently turned 25, has been a successful coach on the high school level since he was 20. Last season he lead his Wyoming Valley Green Hawks to a state 3-A championship, despite starting nobody with more than two years varsity experience. "This opportunity afforded me is the opportunity of a lifetime" Radebaugh said at a press conference held outside DeGol Arena. "The players, students, faculty and alumni of this great learning institution deserve to have great pride in our basketball teams. I feel with the talent we have here we can be successful with the right work ethic." Radebaugh will have his work cut out for him, as St. Francis hasn't enjoyed much recent success and a rather young team. The Red Flash have no seniors this season and only one scholarship to give for next year. The Red Flash open the season at home against American University of the Patriot League on November 10th.

Red Flash overcome American in sloppy opening game
Loretto, PA

The St Francis Red Flash wasted no time in getting rookie coach Hal Radebaugh his first NCAA victory, a 50-49 triumph over the visiting Eagles of American University. "It feels great to get the monkey off our backs, especially in the very first game of the season." a beaming Radebaugh said post game outside the Red Flash lockerroom. "It was a total team effort out there tonight, all 9 guys I put in there got their names into the scoring column and that's what I like to see." Junior Devin Sweetney lead all scorers with 13 points, including 6 points in the final push to help overcome a six point American lead with under two minutes to go. "We never would have had to mount a comeback if we just would have shot better from the line," commented Radebaugh. "We must shoot better than we did tonight if we have any hopes of upsetting Penn State in our next game." The Red Flash shot just 33% (4-12) from the line and allowed American to overcome an early eight point deficit. St Francis jumped out to a quick 14-6 lead, before being outscored 13-9 to close out the first half. American took the lead 3 minutes into the second half and wouldn't relinquish the lead until under a minute to go. Down 45-39 with 1:40 to go, Devin Sweetney drove the lane and got an easy layup to cut the American lead to five. St Francis utilized a 1-2-1-1 press and Sweetney got a steal on an errant pass by Frank Borden and nailed a 10 footer to cut into the Eagle lead once more. American broke the press on their next inbound and got an easy basket from center Constantin Motnii to push the lead back to 49-43. Sweetney wasted no time in answering back at the other end of the floor. American again couldn't break the press and turned the ball over, as Marquis Ford then found a wide open Chris Berry on the wing for a three pointer to cut the lead to one at 49-48. American ran the clock down and missed on a short jump hook by Motnii. Ford raced out in front and was hit with a lob pass by Sweetney, Ford missed the layup, but was fouled hard by Frank Borden. Ford missed both free throws, but the second of which caroomed high into the waiting arms of Bassirou Dieng who made the putback with 20 seconds left on the clock to set the final score. Garrison Carr missed a 14-foot desperation shot at the buzzer and the Red Flash hung on in thrilling fashion for the 50-49 win. St Francis travels to the Bryce Jordan Center to face the Nittany Lions of Penn State on Monday.

Sweetney injured as Nittany Lions crush Red Flash

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for the Red Flash in a 81-54 loss on Monday night at a half empty Bryce Jordan Center. The best of times because the Red Flash out played the bigger, stronger and faster Nittany Lions for the first 10 minutes of their first road test. The worst of times because everything from then out fell apart, and not to mention that Devin Sweetney went down with an injury two minutes into the game and will be gone for an undetermined amount of time. "This was definitely a heads and tails kind of game out there tonight," said first year Flash coach Hal Radebaugh, "this game clearly left me scratching my head and my players leaving with their tails between their legs." Radebaugh was clearly upset that the basketball gods were not shining on his team for the remaining 20 minutes. "We did everything just like we've practiced all year. We ran the floor and got a lot of open looks and they all seemed to fall. We had them realing, they were on the ropes and coming out of that timeout it was as if they put a lid on our basket." St Francis lead the Nittany Lions 31-24 with just under five to play in the first half before the Lions went on a 14-0 run to end the first half. As if that wasn't enough to overcome, the Lions ran away in the second half, using two 10-0 spurts to outscore the Flash 43-23 and put the game well out of reach by the time the second half was only half over. "We have to learn from this and move forward. We're going to miss Devin (Sweetney) in our coming games, but we have another shot at redemption against the Bears (Morgan State) on Wednesday," Radebaugh commented. Four Nittany Lions scored in double figures, led by Mike Walker's 19, and double-doubles by Geary Claxton (16-10 rbs) and Brandon Hassell (13-16 rbs), Danny Morrissey chipped in 13 points off the bench for the Lions. The Red Flash had three in double figures, with Bassirou Dieng leading the way with 13. Chris McFarland and Marquis Ford added 12 and 10 respectively.
