RAZR, do you have access to Baseball America's website or their prospect handbooks? If not, I can give you a screen name and a password to their website because they do list and cover some detailed information about these things.

Here is a site that I found out about recently:
http://www.60ft6in.com/index.html

While it does list MPH, it doesn't list what the specific type of pitch is.
For example, look at Brandon Webb. http://www.60ft6in.com/DBacks.html It lists him as having a fastball that's 86-91. This listing really represents his sinker because he rarely throws a regular fastball.

Re: RAZRr1275's Pitch Edits Thread

I can see this thread being sticky'd

I was going to post this type of thread last year myself

1. Please post ANYTHING about pitchers that mlb.com will not tell me. i.e someone throwing a 12-6 curve or a knuckle curve instead of a regular curveball. Or a running fastball, 2 seamer, or sinker instead of a 4 seamer. THis would be greatly appreciated.

2. Strut24 and brunnoce will be around to help but last year I had 3 more guys and I would like to operate with the same amount of people so if anyone could help me out this year please let me know via either a post in this thread or a pm.

Thanks!

This is going to be an awesome year for the show!

Yeah I saw that site somewhere around OS. It's good but I'm looking more along the lines of movement. It's really hard to tell from pitchtrack whether you should put down a 12-6 curve a sweeping curve, or a generic curve in the game. They all look the same so that's more along the lines of what i'm looking for.

It was last year. I used it as an info and roster thread. I just started it late last year so not many people posted but hopefully since it's started earlier more people will see it and respond

@ RAZRr1275

you know I know about this...the whole movement thing. For lack of a better term, it's an acquired taste---one needs to literally spend hundreds of hours of watching video and also knowing by pitch break/speed and a pitchers' arsenal, what is the visual one sees. The one I think many get confused over is the difference between a sinker and 2-seam fastball. Sometimes I mistake the two, most times I feel I can identify the difference.

Also the cutter and slider can confuse some, a running fastball and a out of control fastball (lol), a knuckle-curve (which basically is a sharp "11-7" break), as well as a slurve and slider.

It's VERY satisfying to be able to not only identify the pitch types, but to assign a numerical factor to the degree of break. But again, it takes hundreds of hours. I've been doing it since MVP 2004.

I've had some on OS ask me if I can teach this, I tell them it's impossible. You have to view pitches over and over and over and over again---and in time, your eyes/mind will assign a numerical factor, if this is what you're into.

I see. Well, Baseball America usually does list these things for the top pitchers in each organization. So, if you need access to their site, let me know.

I completely agree with Carew. Differentiating pitch types is just something that you have to learn through either playing and/or watching real baseball. Even if you know what to look for, it can still be difficult to differentiate pitch types. Sometimes, it's impossible to label a pitch type 100% accurately.

Then, you have to play the game (MLB The Show) to learn how each pitch looks and if they're correct. Plus, you have to learn the differences in how each pitch type and pitch slider was programmed.

Re: RAZRr1275's Pitch Edits Thread

First, I loved your work last year.

Second, are you familiar with The Hardball Times? Here's a link to their "Anatomy of a Player" articles.

Sorry I didn't post links to each pitcher but I'm sure we all know who they are! Furthermore, most of these articles focus on pitchers anyhow.

Looking at Phil Hughes' article, they show this information
1) His four pitches
2) The vertical and horizontal movement of them
3) Side and top views of the movement of his curve and fastball
4) Comparisons to others (for example, the point out the difference between his curve and Ben Sheets')
5) Other information

This may not be useful but if it is, I'm glad to help!

-------

Oh, and so you have something to look forward to: Any idea when the rosters will be ready for download?

edit: I wanted to seriously (very seriously) stress the above statement was meant as a joke!
