Crossing ???

Is there any point of this in FIFA09 ??

I've tried using assisted and semi-assisted but there doesn't seem to be much point has the ball just balloons in and invariably the defenders jsut head it away.

On PES the inswinging cross once a major weapon but here it's alomst redundant. Or is it just me ?

Also the double / triple tap for medium and low crosses don't seem to work either ? Is this anything to do with the fact I've changed the controller config to match PES ?

Any help appreciated. I want to love this game but I'm getting very frustrated....

I'm a PES-convert, myself, and I can confirm crossing is different in FIFA. Forget about doing the fancy crosses for now, and just focus on the basic lobbed cross (single press of the long pass button).

In FIFA, you generally have to hold the pass button a little longer than you do in PES to achieve the same pass distance. You will have to invest some time to get a feel for how pass distance relates to the power bar. Try to time your crosses so the power bar stops a little under half-way as a starting point.

Secondly, you need get control of your target man as early as possible -- chances are, your cross will be less than ideal so you need to look for the yellow marker in the box and GET TO IT. Once there, immediately fight for position. Press the shoot button with a specified direction and pray that you get something for your trouble.

Sounds complicated, but it's not that bad after some practice. It's a very satisfying way to score a goal.

FYI, I'm playing with the default "new alternative" control settings. I started on pro difficulty.

I think you're just the sort of person I've been looking for on this forum. 10 years worth of PES means that hold habits die hard and I'm finding the whole FIFA expereince a little frustrating though I'm prepared to give it a good go.

Any other tips on things such as shooting ? I feel that in PES if you got into a good scoring position and fired off a shot you had a good chance of scoring. Not so in FIFA though, which considering the amount of chances I carve out (on pro) is deflating to say the least. There seems to be so much more involved, pace control, finesse shot, aiming the shot on semi ( I haven't got a clue about this).

Any experiences you've had with the game i'd love to hear...

Keep at it. I had the same frustrations as you at first after spending much time with Winning Eleven.

You'll start to pick it up if you experiment. Outside of the box, a finesse shot works wonders.

The shooting was actually my first complaint when I played the FIFA09 demo. When you took a poor shot on PES it would be indicated by an off-target strike or a slow pace ball that's easily intercepted by the GK. This is not so obvious in FIFA.

Shooting definitely requires more composure in FIFA. You will have to develop new habits when approaching the opposing goal. For starters, remember to knock the ball ahead of you to achieve space during a breakaway. In PES you did this by repeatedly pressing the RB/R1. In FIFA, you need to repeatedly move the right stick into the desired direction during your run. Once you have some space and you near the goal, slow down your player with LT. If you have semi-assisted shooting on (or whatever the default is), don't be afraid to aim the left analog stick at a slightly more extreme angle than you're used to -- the semi-assist will help you adjust.

Another difference is that sharp-angled strikes are more effective in PES. I find that the FIFA goalie closes down on these angles more effectively. That's not to say you shouldn't try them, but be aware of the goalie's position before you do. Try bending your runs to confuse the GK and slot it down the line.

I find that the key to a successful cross is using LB when you see your forwards on a run into the box. By holding LB while using X to determine your cross power, you initiate an early cross which will swing the ball directly into the box from pretty much any point past midfield. When you see your forwards sprinting upfield while you have the ball on the wings, hold down LB and let the cross rip. I've had a ton of great diving headers and in-stride delivery shots using this method.

Yeah I just got the game myself and I have been doing that which seems to work.
