Into The Wild - A Minnesota Wild Blog

Welcome to Into The Wild – your number one blog for Minnesota Wild news and features. You won’t read a lot of post/pre-game coverage here (except for big match ups and division rivalries and stuff like that). Instead I will be bringing you rumours and updates from the locker room and front office.

The Wild fire GM Doug Risebrough

A press release was sent out earlier today stating that Minnesota Wild GM Doug Risebrough has been fired. This doesn’t come as a surprise seeing as the Wild are in 11th place in the Western Conference with a 19-19-0-2 record. Wild owner Craig Leipold was quoted saying he no longer has any confidence in the way Risebrough has run the franchise.

Affective immediately Risebrough will be replaced by former New York Rangers General Manager Pontus Lundgren. Lundgren brought the Rangers to the playoffs last season but his contract was not extended into this season.

Pre-game: Oilers at Wild

The Wild (21-19-0-2) will host Northwest Division rivals the Edmonton Oilers (17-13-0-12) on January the 15th. Only two points behind the Wild will set out to tie the Oilers for the 5th place in the division.

A couple of changes have been made to the lineup before tonight’s game. Colton Gillies has been replaced by Craig Weller who will center the fourth line. Gillies will be sent down to the Houston Aeros where he will be assuming sniper duties on the first line. Tomas Mojzis, who’s been scratched the last couple of games, was also sent down to the Aeros.

The Wild will have to keep an extra eye on Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff. Both lead the Oilers in points with 32 pts. each.

The Oilers will have to play without Tom Gilbert who’s out with a herniated disc until the 25th of March. Dustin Penner is playing with a pulled groin.

To no-one’s surprise Josh Harding will start in goal, having only allowed one goal in the Wild’s 4-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Pouliot comes out big as Wild rally to beat the Oilers in OT

Minnesota Wild rookie Ben Pouliot had a career high three point night as the Wild beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in overtime. After a scoreless first, Pouliot found Miko Koivu in the slot just 5:36 into the second period. “Ben made a great pass and left me with a wide open goal. It would have been hard not to score”, Koivu said after the game. Thirteen minutes later Pouliot found the back of the net on a power play goal assisted by Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Owen Nolan.

The Oilers came out hard in the third period after allowing 18 shots on goal in the first two periods. Erik Cole scored just 2:11 into the third period followed by a goal by Sheldon Souray that just trickled past Josh Harding with 56 seconds remaining of the third period.

In overtime James Sheppard only needed 4 minutes and 25 seconds and some help by Martin Skoula and Ben Pouliot to put one behind Dwayne Rolston.

Three stars of tonight's game:

1. Ben Pouliot

2. Miko Koivu

1 goal

3. James Sheppard

1 goal
