Return to Glory - A Michigan Dynasty

Rodriguez Era ready to kick off in Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, Michigan --
For the first time since 1995, the team with the most wins in FBS (formerly Division 1AA) college football will have a new man running the show.

The University of Michigan's season opener Saturday against the Utah Utes will be Rich Rodriguez' head coaching debut for the Maize and Blue. After several seasons of success at West Virginia, Rodriguez was hired to take over for Lloyd Carr, who retired last season.

Rodriguez inherits a team with a proud history that includes 42 Big Ten conference championships and seven national titles. However, the Maize and Blue have hit some snags in recent seasons, and have not lived up to Michigan standards.

Last season the Wolverines opened the season to two straight losses, a shocking defeat to FCS Appalachian State and then another to Oregon, both teams that run what is called the "spread" offense. So, when the head coaching job opened up this offseason, the Athletic Department went on a search for a head coach that could implement the spread offense in Michigan. They believe that Rich Rodriguez can, and will, bring the spread offense to Michigan and bring the school back to glory.

Rodriguez' first test will come on Saturday, when the Wolverines and their inexperienced offense will be tested by a tough Utah team. This will be the first meeting ever by the two schools in football.

Dynasty Note: I have been running dynasty over at DynastyManager.com for several years, but really think that the community over there is dead. I am hoping that moving my dynasty here will really get me noticed. And if it doesn't...oh well I still enjoy writing up reports.

Re: Return to Glory - A Michigan Dynasty

Wolverines beat Utes to Open 2008

ANN ARBOR, Michigan:
The Rich Rodriguez era in Ann Arbor began with a victory in their 2008 season opener yesterday. The Michigan Wolverines (0-0)rode a stifling defense and a good passing game to a 24-10 win in the Big House against Utah.

The first quarter was dominated by the Utes, as they scored all of their points for the game and racked up over one hundred yards in the first. Brian Johnson threw his only touchdown pass of the afternoon, hitting tight end Donald LaPorte from six yards out to give Utah a 7-0 lead. The Wolverines would respond two minutes later with a touchdown pass by Quarterback Steven Threet. However, Utah kicker Louie Sakoda hit a 41 yard field goal to end the quarter with the Utes ahead.

That would be the last time the Utes would score and the last time they had a lead against the Wolverines. Michigan would reel off 17 straight points to pull of the 24-10 victory. Threet would throw another touchdown pass in the second quarter, and would also run for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Senior kicker K.C. Lopata added a 27 yard field goal in the third quarter as well.

The Wolverines came into this game with a bit of a quarterback controversy, but there will no longer be one. Redshirt freshman Steven Threet, making his first collegiate start ever, completed 60% of his passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. He was also a threat running the ball, as he ran for 28 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries.

While the offense had a lot of questions heading into 2008, the defense was a known factor for the Wolverines. They showed that yesterday, as they held the Utes to 231 offensive yards and forced three turnovers, two of them fumbles. Cornerback Morgan Trent led the team with thirteen tackles, while Tim Jamison and Terrance Taylor both recorded a sack and Brandon Harrison picked off a pass in the endzone late in the game.

Re: Return to Glory - A Michigan Dynasty

Defense Grounds the Redhawks

ANN ARBOR, Michigan --
The Michigan Wolverines and Miami University Redhawks have more in common than you might think. Before he was one of the greatest coaches in the history of Michigan football, Bo Shembecler was a tackle on the Miami University football team, and ended up playing under Woody Hayes. Hayes would go on to coach the Ohio State Buckeyes, and there were many a battle between the Wolverines and Buckeyes on fall afternoons with Bo and Woody prowling the sidelines.

In 1963, Shembecler returned to Miami University and became the head coach of the football team, known as the Redhawks. Shembecler led the team to a 40-17-3 record and two Mid-American Conference Championships in six seasons before heading to Michigan to coach.

After turning in one of the best debuts in the history of the program, freshman Quarterback Steven Threet had his second consecutive 200+ passing game and second consecutive multiple passing touchdown performance in just his second career start.

Threet completed 69% of his passes for 234 passing yards and three touchdowns. Despite the fact that his first pass of the game bounced off Tony Clemon's hands and was picked off by the Miami secondary. Threet overcame the early pick and led the Wolverines to their second win of 2008.

The Wolverines were hit by the injury bug for the first time this season yesterday. The young receiving corps took a hit as sophomore wide out Junior Hemingway left the game in the second half, and was diagnosed with a strained pectoral muscle. He will be sidelined for three weeks, and Rich Rodriguez revoked the redshirt of freshman receiver Martavious Odoms to take over for Hemingway in the fourth receiver slot. Hemingway was leading the team in receptions (9) and yards (119), before going down with the injury.

The highlight of the game for the Wolverines was their defense, as they held the Redhawks to 12 points and under 200 yards of total offense. Defensive end Brandon Graham led the charge, as he recorded nine tackles and had two of the four sacks the Wolverines had yesterday. Linebacker John Thompson and fellow end Adam Patterson also had a sack. The defense also picked off Miami Quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh twice, as both Charles Stewart and Donovan Warren picked off a pass.
