Trident’s Up

This is my new Seattle Mariners franchise, on MLBTS 2010 on my old school PS2 system.

My beloved Mariners have let the hall of fame careers like Jr, Edgar, Ichiro, The Big Unit and King Felix fall on hard times. The last greatest run we had was 2001 when the team one 126 games and then the Yankees came along and took us out.

The issue is our organization from the top down don’t care…but that another issue for another time.

In this franchise installment, I’ll be at the helm of the organization and see if I can bring the World Series trophy back to the rainy city.

First off…the rules for the gameplay.

• As the GM, I will oversee Roster Moves; Lineups/Rotation; 40-Man; Waivers; Injuries; Trades; Management; Rehab Facilities; Free Agency; Contracts; Facilities; Marketing & Banking. How the players are trained will be put to CPU because I’ve always found it annoying and it’s more a coach thing anyways.

• 0 games will be played, 100% sim

• I feel the Mariner’s are a mid-market team. Not the Red Sox/Yankees/Mets in being able to sign whoever they want regardless of price. To show this; I cannot sign anyone from free agency that is either “Potential A” or “Currently A”. I can sign as may “B” level players as I want to an MLB contract and AA ball. AAA ball cannot be “A” talent unless I drafted them since the real life Mariners focus on their farm system.

• Free Agency: If there is “A” or “B” talent still available after free agency has ended the above rules aren’t in effect since all the big market teams already had first dibs on them.

• Trades: I cannot go for “A” level talent unless I give up an “A” & “B” level in return. If I want to go down, I can do as much of that as I see fit (ie. trade my “B” for “C” or worse)

Feel free to make suggestions

Re: Trident’s Up

I was introduced today as the new GM of the Seattle Mariners today in a press conference.

“Thank you to Nintendo of America, whom is represented by Howard Lincoln; for giving me this opportunity to be the newest General Manager of the Seattle Mariners. While I’m aware that the Mariners while a storied franchise; haven’t be able to put it all together to make much noise in the playoffs. This is where I hope the change things for the culture of the club. I wish to thank Jack Zduriencik for their time before me, and I know you did the best job possible.

I look forward to meeting the various managerial staff put together so we can all work together to put together a championship winning clubhouse culture together for the great fans of Seattle to bring home a World Series trophy. Thank you”

I looked over the list of goals the eerie group had set forth, to accomplish during my 5 year contract with them. Nothing seemed too difficult to obtain; win 5 games in a row; have a pitching staff with an ERA under 4.40; make the playoffs; among other things. The next thing on my agenda was to meet the managerial crew and coaches to see how they would all fit in with what I wanted to accomplish.

Re: Trident’s Up

I met with the various coaching staff. Rickey Fischer was the manager. After our meeting, I could tell he lacked leadership skills, but was above average in his defensive mindset. The hitting coach Erich Mixon and pitching coach Cletus Gtanger left a lot to be desired. I felt their knowledge of how to develop out big league talent, could have been better. Our 1st base, 3rd base and farm directors were all top notch. Dario Lyons (1st base), Myles Aviles (3rd base) and Andy Courson had leadership, knowledge and situational awareness to bring me hope for next season.

I had thought of releasing some of the coaching staff, but I wanted to see how things panned out for myself before I make any rash decisions.

I also took a look at all three levels of the roster; AA, AAA and MLB. I had to make some tough decisions, but chose to release a handful of players I just didn’t see helping our team win at the respective levels. I then scoured the free agent market to find veterans to bring in at those levels to provide leadership; a winning culture to be able to turn our mindset around for the upcoming 2010 season.

Free agent signing included 1B Rich Aurilia & Mike Jacobs; 2B Nomar Garciapara; and LF Garret Anderson.

Re: Trident’s Up

My 2010 season recap.

Before the All Star break; the decisions I made helped set the team up for success beyond my expectations. Looking back at prior records, our team was seemingly 3rd and 4th place finishes. This year however, our team had an AL West lead, by 6 games over the Texas Rangers with a 56-32.

I looked at our roster, the disabled list and it was quite clean. Normal injuries happened to various players, but no major issues arose so I decided to stay out at the trade deadline as I pushed for a playoff spot.

The end of the regular season came in quick, as both the Tacoma Rainers of AAA and the Diamond Jaxxof AAA made their league playoffs. The had news is both teams were taken out in the first round.

The Seattle Mariners had made the playoffs in their first year under my organizational leadership with a record of 99-63 and winning the AL West. Our first round opponent would be the Tampa Bay Rays. We were eliminated after 4 games, but the ownership team was quite happy with my first year success. The Yankees defeated the Cardinals after 6 games to win the 2010 World Sereis.

I accomplished multiple goals they had set forth for me: team ERA under 4.40; made the playoffs; had multiple players in the All Star game including Chone Figgins (3B), Ichiro and Milton Bradley (OF), Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez (SP) and David Aardsma (CP). I also multiple win streaks of at least 5 games and had a winning percentage above .400 at a crisp .611.

Re: Trident’s Up

2010 Offseason Recap:

Only one notable player retired; that being Ken Griffey Jr. he had compiled what was a sure fire Hall of Fane career. He compiled 2879 Hits, 657 HR, 1911 RBI and a .285 average.

Although my initial view of the coaching staff was average at best; they had all worked very hard and outperformed my expectations. Nobody retired or had their contact lapse. I chose not to rock the boat as my old man would say; and don’t make any alterations to the coaching staff for the upcoming 2011 season.

I had $62 Million in cap space. I used this money to secure key players like SP Ryan Rowland-Smith, SP Cliff Lee and CP David Aardsma to new contracts. I brought in veteran 1B Lyle Overbay, 1B Fernando Tatis Sr and OF Austin Kearns to help fill the voids of a few players whom were wanting contracts I didn’t feel comfortable with cost wise. Heading into the new season; the grandiose ranked top 3 or better in Batting, Pitching, Defense and Overall (1st/3rd/1st/1st)

I spent the $9M to buy a Team Bus for the year, so they would feel more rested in hopes it would propel us back ast the first round of the playoffs.

Re: Trident’s Up

2011 All Star Break Recap

The team is underperforming as compared to last year this time. This year they have the slimmest of margins over the LA Angels by only .5 of a game. Their 47-41 record would put them in 2nd place in the WC hunt…which is a place they don’t necessarily want to be heading into the 2nd half of the season. The Red Sox holds the best record in the American League with 55 wins.

The next few weeks; leading into the trade deadline will help shape how I handle the post season push. Our team is 1 game behind the Ranger who sit atop our division. And we are looking up at the Yankees and Twins who are 1st and 2nd in the wild card race. We are 7.5 games behind the leading Yankees with their 61-42 record.

It was tough, but I chose to trade a pair of starting pitchers in Ross Ohlendorf and Ian Snell to the Florida Marlins. In return they would send me Anibal Sanchez. He is in the final year of his contract for $3.1M. He is 27 years old, with a 5-5 record on the year and 2.97 ERA.

I signed SP Wilfredo Lesezma to a 2 year contract to provide our AAA club with a viable fifth starter in the rotation.
