We need a new injury system

I know most casual players would hate this, but for us sim guys I think it’s time for an updated injury systems.

Baseball injuries are so much different than other sports injuries and MLB the show does not even come close to accurately reflecting that. Heck this game doesn’t even have Tommy John surgery unless you go in and manually give someone elbow surgery and even then that doesn’t give you the accurate 12-14 month recovery. In real life pitchers go on the 60 day IL with lat strains. If I remember right this game has a lat strain as a day to day type injury. Elbow inflammation and hamstring strains are also a day to day thing on The Show.

We need Tommy John, we need accurate recovery timelines, rehab assignments in the minors, injury set backs while rehabbing, be able to back date IL placement, etc.

How about when a defensive player is too hurt to play the field, but can still DH like Ohtani last year. If I pitcher has a history of elbow or shoulder injuries that should effect his pitching attributes. Injuries should provide wear and tear over time. And we definitely shouldn’t have limited IL spots like we currently do

Thoughts?

Sounds like a ton of detailed programming.

If they could use a cleaned up version of the 2k system, that would be ideal. Would take years to implement though since it’s not easy.

I really like the manual injury function myself. If a pitcher needs TJS and comes back too soon, I can always add more time to his injury.

Probably would be but I agree with the OP that it would be nice. Especially on the pitching side of things.

One more thing I’d add is that expanding the roster size needs to happen first, otherwise pitching injuries would be a disaster. There simply aren’t enough pitchers in your roster to be able tho fill the spots needed for the amount of pitcher injuries that happen in baseball today.

Yeah, when they increased the roster size from 90 to 93, those were basically just an increase in everyday position players. We were already capped at 45 pitchers with 90 roster spots and we remain capped at 45 with 93 roster spots. Although you only technically need 30 pitchers healthy, you could have 15 injured pitchers, but I believe we are capped at something like 7 injured players per team IIRC.

EDIT - Apparently you can injure a lot more than seven players at a time. I always thought it was capped at seven. Learn something new everyday.

Re: We need a new injury system

Definitely agree with everything said on this. I’ll add:

I’ve given up relying the logic for injuries. Players only get injured in games. It doesn’t come in between. Too many times the SP goes out in the first inning (creating an impromptu bullpen game). Never does the SP go out before his start (which is how it happens the vast majority of the time IRL). And if a franchise has a certain amount of injuries (and it’s not very many) the rest of the team becomes immortal (can’t be injured) until a slot opens.

At least they give some control if you want it. Manual injuries.

But even that’s unnecessarily cumbersome. Just let us pick the exact numbers of days. Why the ridiculous gaps. Nothing between 13 days and 35 days. Then another one between 70 and 120 (I think). There issome variance there getting into those gaps but is it manual injuries or not???

Those are the problems with manual. The stupid gaps and the roster size issue. I wind up sending good players to a-ball and dropping them from the 40man just to save the il slot.

I think roster sizing would require coding (which was devoted to contracts—which I have no interest in).

But how hard can it be to rework the injury days? I suppose it was done originally on purpose. They like it that way????
