Grass and Dirt in MLB The Show 25 discussion

I wanted to start this thread so we can keep any discussion of the new graphical enhancement for 25, the grass and dirt, all together with lots of examples. To start it off I took a lot of captures from the most recent video about RTTS and I have to say it's a little hit and miss for me.

There are definitely some shots where the grass looks a lot better from close and medium distances, but I feel like from further distances is loses its depth and goes back to looking like a splotchy flat texture.

As for the dirt, I think it leaves a lot more to be desired. There are some shots where it looks decent, mainly super zoomed in, but from most angles it looks just as flat and low res as it has in the past.

Now I fully admit this could be due to youtube compression, not to mention the game is still a WIP, but I just thought I should bring it up, and show plenty of examples of both the grass and dirt both looking good and bad.

First up, examples where I think the grass looks pretty good:

Examples of where I think the look of the grass is lacking, mainly in wider, zoomed out shots, where it looks like a simple flat texture with no depth:

Screenshots aren’t really going to show anything because with the lighting system they use, it’s all about how it looks in motion. We won’t be able to tell how improved it is (if at all) until we actually get our hands on the game.

I’m positive we will see some good improvements otherwise they wouldn’t have mentioned it. If it’s at a level we are all hoping for I don’t know but we really have to see it in motion in 4k on our own tv’s before we can really say something about it.

Furthermore I must say the dirt has always been different per stadium where in some it looked decent and in some pretty bad.

Check these from The Show 22

And lets also give the team some praise because I always love the panning shots from the crowd. I think almost anyone could mistake these for actual pictures.

I assume I have low checklist bar to clear but:
A) Is the grass green?
B) Is the dirt brown?

A&B, check and check.

For me, anything more is extra icing on the cake.

I've found that the time of day also has a big effect on how the dirt looks. When the sun is high in the sky or its night time it tends to look very flat (not just lighting wise, but literally like a flat ps3 texture) and when its lower around the 4pm mark it can look better with more depth and detail. I believe that's why your first pic from 22 looks so good.

The color is also wildly inconsistent, for example it looks good at T-Mobile Park with that vibrant tan color, but Great American Ballpark for instance has a weird splotchy, almost grey color that doesn't look right.
