Madden 25 Retro Era 1975-1983

I have begun working on the next retro era. Shotgun is more than just a novelty (although still seldom used). Offense is much more balanced (in fact never again after 1973 will the nfl see more rushing yards then passing yards). Defense is still king but it’s more schematic now (a lot more zone and double high safety) to account for the passing innovations. And although the shortest of my retro eras still plenty of Great Teams to play with.

File name will be RetroEra75to83

Completed teams:
1980 Cleveland Browns
1975 St. Louis Cardinals
1983 Detroit Lions

1980 Cleveland Browns
Often referred to as the Cardiac Kids this team was involved in thirteen games decided by seven points or less.

Sipe was the AP MVP and still holds the all time passing yardage record for the Browns at over 4000 yards.

Sacked on only four percent of dropbacks passing was definitely the weapon of choice as five different players caught fifty or more balls from Sipe.

The defense was average at best but took the ball away enough to give Sipe a chance to win it at the end over and over again.

Love this era, Madden 22 has great 1980 & 81 rosters.

1975 Cardinals

The grandfather of modern passing game is here and leading the St. Louis Cardinals. Air Cornell is here to stay unlike some of the other pass first playbooks of the past.

A scheme doesn’t work without good players however and the Cards have some great ones.

Terry Metcalf RB/WR/KR is a nightmare for all opposing defensive and special team coaches.

Mel Gray is as good a deep threat as this era knows.

And this offensive line is arguably one of the three greatest pass protecting lines in all eras.

All that is music to the ears of confident QB Jim Hart and all the BIG RED fans.

Can their defense do enough for this potent offense to win this era?

1983 Detroit Lions

Not looking great after a 1-4 start, a home game vs division rival Green Bay righted the ship. The defense became the best in the NFC and when Billy Sims came back after week 6 these Lions really started to roar.

The Lions came back in multiple games and overall from their 1-4 start to win the division. A very solid defense that in multiple games scored more safeties then TDs allowed, all time great RB and young offense that refused to get down when making mistakes led these Lions to their first division championship since 1957.

I came across some Billy Sims highlights when I was watching some old Lions games a few days ago.

Awesome RB in his prime.

Not familiar with 80's that much but was Eric Hipple the QB?

Hipple is the starter all sixteen games I believe. Although Daneilson is still around and played in half the games. So Hipple was definitely struggling especially early in the season. The whole team gets better when Sims is healthy though.
