There’s been a reckoning of sorts going on within sports media — and more specifically NBA...

This is literally one of my favorite articles I've ever read. Well done.

Great article. I was in my 40s and you make great points. Tecmo Super Bowl with every team. RBI baseball on Nintendo. Tecmo basketball on super Nintendo. All great games. Doubt any are better than NBA 2k25. And, I won’t even play 25 a lot because I am mad about the limited camera angles in freestyle.

Nostalgia goes hand in hand with first impressions and an innocent/ignorant mind.

Personally, I still love NBA Jam 2000. Is it ***? Well, kinda, especially the CPU AI. The substitution system is better than the current 2K25 substitution system though.

Haha well everything is better than the 2K sub system. I think by 2000 I was a little Jam'd out and my last hurrah had more been with NBA Hangtime.

Re: 'It Used to Be Better' but It's Not Usually as Good as You Remember

Haven't finished reading yet but had to comment. This makes me think of how, for YEARS, I've gone back and forth about whether or not I should buy a PS2 and some old favorite games (NBA Street, Blitz, Hitz, NFL 2k5, etc) but I could never get myself to pull the trigger because I have a feeling I'll play for maybe a few hours, perhaps realize the games aren't quite as fun as I remembered, and then never touch them again.

I also scratched that nostalgia itch recently by getting an Xbox 360 from a cousin who hadn't touched it in years. I played NFL Blitz from 2012 and it held up well. I still had fun, but it was way too easy against the CPU. Also played the NBA Live 10 demo. Not that bad once you get used to it. I still like the presentation and video style of it.

Re: 'It Used to Be Better' but It's Not Usually as Good as You Remember

You're a jerk!! My kind of guy.. I, as a jerk, can smile at this article because I was just talking the other day about how video games had instruction manuals and the young people at my job looked at me like I had 3 heads. They couldn't understand the concept of why a game would have an instruction manual. As far as the amount of NBA games that came out in 99, I do remember playing many of them but 2K was birthed that year which gave a sting to the whole genre. Inside drive was pretty good as well. I do have my bouts of nostalgia from time to time, only to be reminded of the limitations of yesterdays technology versus today. I do feel that creators of today don't share the passion and talent of those of last generation. There is a level of attention that's needed to create games, that I don't feel this generation has yet to develop. Some of the older guys that have been pushed out for younger people with less of a salary still have tools that are needed to connect pieces that would make today's market shine. Instead, we have this :attack the profit margin" mindset that has ruined the very fabric of gaming. Our willingness to pay a premium for minimum gain has made gaming as shallow as a puddle. At least, I can put my NCAA Football 14 emotions to bed now. Maybe 2K will give me a creditable football experience that will allow me to put my past to sleep and move on in life.
