Rutgers Announces Schiano Out, Mann In
Following reports that Greg Schiano was having an improper relationship with a staff member of the Rutgers athletic department, the Scarlet Knights have announced he's stepped down as head coach of with just a month to go until the season begins.
In his place the program announced a new hire, on an interim basis. Oliver B. Mann, the former head coach of NCAA Div II Regis Rangers has been hired to try and lead the Scarlet Knights to their third bowl game in four seasons.
Mann takes over a team with a promising level of talent after finishing 7-6 in 2023. While the Big Ten has become an even tougher place to play, there are some people who think the squad is good enough they could surprise.
During his introductory press conference, Mann made it clear just how important this particular job is to him.
"My great grandfather Oliver D. Mann was one of first head coaches of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. For that reason, myself and my family have long had a special place in my heart for this school. Now I get to walk in his footsteps and show everyone just how good Rutgers can be."
Mann, who is thought to be an offensive guru, will have his work cut out for him. While Rutgers has star runningback Kyle Monangai, the rest of that side of the ball is a massive question mark.
Rutgers has had a problem at quarterback for what seems like forever. This year, they'll be trying Athan Kaliakmanis under center. Kaliakmanis came to Jersey from Minnesota where he was a good, but not great quarterback there.
The Scarlet Knights open the season next month against Howard and it's safe to say that Mann is going to want to make a statement in that game.
