Wham blocks targeting the safeties?

Help me out here. I run a lot off the south carolina playbook (rpos, gun and pistol).

I'll call a play with a wham block running scheme and some of the time the TE is marked as targeting the safety instead of the defensive end or outside linebacker.

Im confused because this assignment will occur frequently from a lot of defensive box looks and i have not been able to correlate this broken block assignment with anything, so whenever i run a wham (or traps) ill just check the blocking manually with L2 and left.

Is there something I can lookout for? Besides opening the preplay menu. If anything Id want to know why this happens in a even helmet situation

Have you checked who’s identified as the Mike? On way too many plays the Mike is defaulted to be someone it really shouldn’t be and this screws up the blocking assignments. I don’t run a lot of plays with wham blocks, so I don’t know if IDing the correct Mike fixes your issues, but picking the right Mike has helped with a lot of funky blocking assignments in my playbook.

Ive never been able to see changing the mike altering blocking assignments. I agree that it looks like the mike is placed on the wrong lb. Ill be sure to try that out thanks

Where do you look to place the mike? I think i used to call the olb in the direction of power runs in 14 to leave another guy unblocked on the weak side

I’ve tested changing the Mike around on run plays in practice and it never changes how the game blocks on run plays. ID the Mike is only relevant for pass protection

Yeah, I've tested it too. IDing the mike is just id'ing a Blitzer in pass protection in this game (and Madden). It's impact on the run game is a myth imo.
