4-2-5 Sub Depth Chart Help

This thread opened my eyes up to me not knowing this formation that well on the depth chart side even though I am running it. Can someone explain to me what I want my sublb, rre, and lle to be and why? My DEs or my OLBs? Thank you.

I do not know the 4-2-5 in this year's game at this point. If the poster is correct that the only DEs that play are the Rush DEs, you want to recruit pass rush specialists (speed rusher or power rusher) only at the DE spot. A run stopper DE probably will not be as effective as a pass rush specialist and I would think a Power Rusher DE would fit the role of a Run Stopper DE better in that defense.


I would think the LBs would be Pass Coverage specialists. If you get a Run Stopper or Power Rusher, you want to make sure he isn't a liability in pass coverage. A Run Stopper who is good in pass coverage might be a very good player because he will defend both the pass and run well.


A pass rush OLB might be more effective as a rush DE. Against a passing offense, your rush DEs should be the best pass rusher whether they are listed as a DE or OLB on your roster. Against a running offense I would lean toward playing DEs at the rush DE spots unless an OLB plays the run better than the best DE.

Yeah, on your depth chart your 4-2-5 is your specialty players. Whoever you set at RLE and RRE as well as the two RDTs and your 2 SLBs. Your depth chart players outside of that make no difference. It's why I switched to 4-3. Still a lot of 4-2-5 and nickel, but I do see more base packages which gives me more of a front 7 rotation. Same as having a different 3rd down back from my main starting HB. To keep players fresh.

I built a custom defense playbook as I tend to go between 4-3 concepts and then 3-3-5 concepts.

Basically you have enough space to add the vast majority of plays and sets the game offers. This allows me to rotate my defensive front based on the starting positions and the reserve positions.

Basically in my base 4-3 I want good run support guys who also have some speed at the DE spot. My LB I definitely skew towards field general and pass coverage as I want them to be able to play in space while taking on offensive lineman. The 3-3-5 uses the same base personnel.

I then use my faster defensive ends and tackles in the reserve end spots and I can rotate the players on my own based on the formations I use. They show up in nickel and dime sets.

My linebackers I try to get 2 off ball that don't leave the field and the third coukd be a power rusher type and then I might utilize him slightly differently than the others. To him possibly being a reserve end. This depends on who I can recruit to move stuff around.

CAVEAT: I use a 425 CPB where it’s called Big Nickel and I’m assuming everything I write below applies to the default 425.

There are 2 formations (it sucks there’s so few) and they both use only SUBLB.

“Over G” uses RDT1, RDT2, but “Under” uses DT1, DT2.

With no package changes they both use RRE, RLE. However, for “Under” formation, the “DE flip” package uses LE1, RE1 (but flipped) instead of RRE, RLE. This means with this package you’ve got your entire normal starting DL for “Big Nickel - Under.”

What I do is I set up my normal LE, RE, DT depth chart as my run stoppers and use “Big Nickel - Under” as my run stopping formation. I then set up my pass rushers in RLE, RRE, RDT and then use “Big Nickel - Over G” as my pass defense base formation. All 3 of my Nickels and both Dimes use RLE, RRE, RDT, and SUBLB, so it’s good I’ve already got them set up with pass rushers.

SUBLB are sadly used in every formation I have except for 5-2 and goal line. I generally just have my 3 best LBs there, with the best coverage guy as #1 since he’s used in Dime.

Yes, because I'm seeing more of my recruited LBs and not just the 3 guys I put in my SLB spot.

I created this a while ago to figure out my 425 depth chart.

The 425 formation on here is represented as Big Nickel as that's what it's called when you create a custom playbook.

I have fast OLB rushers in at RDE and RLE and they seem to work really well in the defense over higher rated traditional DEs who are a little slower.
