Depth Chart question for WR/CB Slots

This is about SLWR and SLCB

For WR there are 5 spots in the depth chart. Do you set it so its ( using random names )

Set A

1. Adam
2. Bob
3. Chris
4. Danny
5. Eddie

SLWR
1. Chris
2. Danny
3. Eddie

This has it so the #3 and SLWR are the same

or

Set B

1. Adam
2. Bob
3. Danny
4. Eddie
5. Frank

SLWR
1. Chris
2. Danny
3. Eddie

Same situation with CB too. Not sure how the game actually does this

There are some offensive formations that utilize your #2 slot WR while there are others that utilize your #3 and #4 in the regular offensive formation. I take slot receivers and slot corners out of the rotation and only have them in the slot typically. For instance, with Ohio State Egbuka and Inniss are not in the 6 man rotation of WRs for me, but are my #1 and #2 slot receivers.

For cornerback your slot corner #1 is obviously in the nickel. So again, with Ohio State I took Hancock out the regular corner rotation because he is the slot corner. In real life more often than not players who play slot do not play X or Z for WRs and same for players who are slot corners vs Field/Boundary corners.

As far as the slot wr and slot cb are concerned, it seems the slot depth chart takes precedence over the regular positions. The number 1 overall receiver in my dynasty is at the top of the regular depth chart and the slot depth chart and he appears in every formation as an outside receiver when there’s only 2 receivers, but will almost always be in the slot position when there’s 3 or more receivers on the field. Same is to be true with the slot cb (or whatever they call it on the depth chart). So you don’t have to take players out of the regular depth chart just for them to be a slot player.

I look at their ratings and decide who I want in the slot or outside (or usually, who I don’t want in one of those spots).

For WRs, I look at RELEASE and height. I’d prefer the taller guys outside, but don’t really care. Mostly I want the guys with the best RLS outside since they’re the ones getting pressed. If I guy has crappy RLS, I don’t want him outside so I move him in the slot.

I.e. for
Name (RELEASE)
1. Adam (80)
2. Bob (70)
3. Chris (90)
4. Danny (95)
5. Eddie

Then my SLWR would be:
1. Adam
2. Bob
3. Eddie
as that gets my best release guys (Chris and Danny) lined up outside when I go 3 and 4 wide.

I do the same for SLCB, except I want my high PRESS guys outside and those with crappy PRS in the slot(s).

For each formation, the game decides a "position" for each spot and then draws from the depth chart. Specialists (SLWR, SLCB, 3DRB, RRE, etc) take precedence.


Let's imagine you come out in some trips formation with the slot on the strong side. The game checks the SLWR depth chart first, sees Chris. He takes the slot. Then the game checks the WR depth chart, sees Adam 1st. He lines up on the offensive left. Then the game checks the WR depth chart again, sees Bob 2nd, and lines him up on the offensive right out wide.

So from left to right you've got: Adam - OL - TE - Chris - Bob.

So you run a play, see Adam in-breaking but don't see the safety coming for his soul. SPLAT! He's injured. You run the next play from the same formation.

Chris goes back to the slot like normal. Now Adam is gone, so Bob is the top of the WR list and takes over on the offensive left. Chris is already accounted for so now Danny comes in on the offensive right.

Bob - OL - TE - Chris - Danny

You run your next play. Chris is looking great but that safety has got you figured out. SPLAT! Now he's injured. You pick from the same formation.

Chris is now gone, so Danny comes into the slot. Bob is still the top of the WR list, so he remains on the left. But with Danny in the slot, Eddie takes over on the right.

So now you have: Bob - OL - TE - Danny - Eddie

Does that make sense?

It really depends on my offense, but usually I want my quickest WR in the slot, but if he's my best WR I want him always on the field. My depth chart usually boils down to something like this (assuming my top rated WR is my quickest)

2. Best big vertical threat
3. Best Release WR of remaining guys (if he's within 5 or so overall of them)
4. Next rated
5. Next rated
6. Next rated

SLWR
1. Quickest WR (If he's my best WR he prioritizes lining up in the slot. I don't put my big vertical threat guy here ever)
2. Quick young or undersized WR I want to throw occasional bubble passes to and get on the field.

At CB I play a ton of zone and off ball with my DBs, and I run a 3-3-5 so I usually have my best run stopping and zone coverage SS in the slot CB spot, with my FR or best young CB in the 2nd SLCB spot.

This way I can always have my 2 best SS on the field depending on if I'm in base defense or nickel/dime as well as get some playing time to a younger guy.

Anyone else notice depth chart in dynasty menus for CB go from 1-5, but in game it is 1-6? I notice I have WR subbing in as the CB #6 even if they are not a two way player.

I treat the slot (WR and DB) as distinct positions and generally do not put players on both positions in the depth chart.

I'd love to see the game give us more realistic depth charts where we could set starters and backups at every position on the field, though, so we could have starters and backups at each WR position.

Even better would be depth charts based on formation.
