Re: What are some house rules and/or franchise ideas to keep things interesting?
SLIDERS
- Every year, I use Armor & Sword's sliders. This year, they are maybe the best he's done. Find his thread or find your own sliders and use them.
- Armor makes a good list of settings options to make the game challenging.
TRADES
- Put the difficulty on VERY HARD.
- Don't fleece the AI. We can all do it but don't. Yesterday, I was offered an 85 OVR 25yo LB (and picks) for a 76 rated LE who was 28yo. It takes discipline but you gotta do it.
- Cannot trade for guys on their rookie deals until they have played 3 years, unless you are giving up a rookie with similar experience and more.
ROSTER
- Don't hoard players. I don't keep backups over 75 OVR when they hit FA. After FA, I can sign them at the start of the next season on one year deals. This prevents me from stacking my roster which reduces injuries from impacting my roster as I can't just plug in a good player with ease.
- Must have 3 QB on your roster and one backup must be lower than 65 OVR or over the age of 32yo.
- Must have 6 safeties: 3 FS and 3 SS. The backup play ST.
- Must have 6 LB if playing a 43 and must have 4 MLB if playing a 34.
- Must at least 9 OL.
- Must have a FB.
- Starters over 80 OVR cannot play ST (apart from OL, K and P).
- Cannot keep more than 8 SS or X-Factor players on your roster.
DRAFT
- Set all positions in the draft to WEAK. It means you have to draft lower rated guys every year and develop them. Good players do still occur but far fewer.
- Only one trade down per draft in first three rounds.
- Only one trade up in the first three rounds.
- In rounds four onward, I can only trade down if someone offers a pick in a future year in the same round. For example, 2024 6th for a 2025 6th. This prevents me from stocking picks.
- ROLL a dice before the draft. Whichever number comes up, I MUST screw up the pick. I must pick someone who will bust. I once got the fourth overall pick and rolled a 1 on the dice and had to pick someone I didn't want despite there being a edge rusher who would have made an immediate impact.
ON-FIELD
- Change the O play book every game. Forcing you to alter your approach just like in real life and not rely on certain plays.
- Main RB can only have 25 total touches each game. I throw to my backs a lot, so I have to manage their touches. I will pull the starter for whole drives to ensure this occurs.
OTHER TEAMS
- In the lead up to the end of the season, I go thru every team and "fix" player deals/contracts to prevent stupid roster decisions. I prevent a team from moving on from a QB or star player when a few caps tweaks could prevent it.
- After the draft, I go thru every team and ensure that players are at the right position. For example, if a 43 team drafts a pass rushing OLB, I will move him to DE. If a team takes a LT when they have a good LT, I'll move him to RT or LG etc. 34 DE will get moved to DT in a 43. If a team has a power rusher at RE but their LE *** a power rusher designation in their scheme, I'll flip the guy to the other side. This does take a while but it helps other teams seem realistic.
- In preseason, I'll alter schemes for other teams to best fit their roster. Let's says a team has a zone run scheme but their OL is mainly power blocking guys, I'll switch it fit. The least important match is RB because the position is the least important. If they have just drafted a QB and you can switch their scheme to one that fits him better.
- Very occasionally, I'll completely intervene and trade rookies if the pick makes no sense. Once, I saw KC move up to a QB in the first round when Mahomes was 27, had won two SB and had four years left on his contract. They literally had no LT and there was one on the board who I had scouted and knew was good. I just went in and fixed this after the draft.
