What type of players for Veer and Shoot?

Hi everyone;

This game is teaching me about CFB, I am new and learning to love this sport.

So I am running Veer and shoot with Miss State playback.

So while I am recruiting, what type of Qb, rb, Wr and TE am I looking for?

Or does it honestly even matter in the game?

Speed in a video game is always going to be a big factor. So if you have two guys that have similar speed. Say player A is 96 speed and player B is 93 speed.

The next thing I would look at is size (because I think size has an impact in gameplay & animations, regardless of what others might say), awareness and route running. If player B is better in those categories than player A, I'm gonna take player B all day because the Veer and Shoot will have plenty of choice/option routes. So the WR needs to have the awareness rating to run the correct route and to run it well.

RBs for Veer and Shoot, I would look for break tackle, acceleration and catching. You should really only run against a light box, so the speed component isn't a huge need, but trucking LBs and safeties is important in the open field. I like acceleration and catch together, because you can hit your RB on a nice Texas route and if he's got good acceleration and you hit him in stride, he can pick up some nice yards.

Re: What type of players for Veer and Shoot?

The veer and shoot revolves around letting the numbers dictate what you do. You spread the field out to make the defense have to decide if they want to give up the run or the pass. What they decide is what drives what you do.

Given the nature of the offense, like was said above, you are generally going to be running into light boxes, so getting a power back with good acceleration is ideal. Obviously if you can get a guy that has power and top end speed, that's great, but if you have to choose between small and fast or big and strong, you want the big and strong in this offense.

With regards to the TE, he's not featured in the passing game much(for reference, 2015 Baylor's leading TE had 6 catches and that offense had nearly 4,000 yards passing), so getting a guy in here that can block is what you want first and foremost to better help punish those light boxes.

At WR, speed is king. The passing game in this offense is usually shot plays, screens, or hitches. And, again, the defense dictates what you're doing. If they are daring you to take shots, you want the speed to punish that. If they are loading the box and playing over the top on the WR's, then you'll take 4-5 yards all day with the hitches. If they are giving you the screens on the outsides when you're stacking and bunching out wide, you take those until they adjust.

With the QB, you want a guy that has a strong enough arm to hit the shots. Accuracy on shots is also ideal. Then you can worry about speed. You don't need RGIII back there to make the offense work. Having a guy that can run at all can add the read to the run game and make the offense that more deadly, but you don't have to have a running QB to make the system work.

With the OL, you need guys that can power run block and can hold up in the pass game for those shot plays. If you don't have a good OL, the offense is hard to make work consistently. Trust me, I am implementing it at UMass and in year 2 my OL is still abysmal and making this offense hard to make work. Nothing is worse than the defense giving you light boxes and not being able to punish it, or the defense daring you to go deep, having the WR get open, and your QB either misses or the OL lets pressure in and you can't hit it. That's been the story of my entire existence at UMass so far.

The offense is pretty simple, but it does require the right players to really make it go.

This is all amazing information. Thank you. Now I know what to look for how to build my offense.

I'm glad its based on recruits stats, and I don't have to focus on the players position type, ie scrambler , improvised or Field General.

Canes covered it well. But having a QB who can move is pretty helpful for the veer and shoot. Because the read option game is definitely part of it. But a lot of this will be on you, as the user, to make the right reads on RPO’s and read options. Because that’s a huge part of the offense. It’s why Tennessee struggled last year with Joe Milton. He couldn’t read defenses. It’s a really fun offense when you have the reads down. Also, use frequent no huddle when you think you can take advantage of the defensive personnel that the AI puts out there.

Big armed QB, a power back, Speed at WR and a blocking TE/FB and big maulers on the OL. At least in real life
