What was the first college football video game you ever played?

Take your mind back to when you first played a COLLEGE football video game and share. This may seem like yesterday for some, though it may feel like an era has passed for others like myself.

My first step into college football gaming was with Bill Walsh College Football for Super Nintendo in 1993, which was also produced by EA Sports. Its Season Mode ended with a 12-team playoff, and the game also featured a 16-team playoff, though I don’t recall playing it enough to remember.

I also eventually played the 1992 title Super Play Action Football. I didn’t care for at the time for reasons I cannot recall. Looking back, the Super Play Action Football game was attempting to fully encompass the American experience of football, having a field of competitive high school teams, 97 college teams/clubs, and all 28 NFL teams at that time.

With our technology, a game of that magnitude in today’s environment would be amazing. What it lacked in graphics, it made up for with ambition.

The first Bill Walsh was mine too. The days of playing with teams like South Bend and Tallahassee. Eventually it progressed in to a season mode a few years later with a bunch of made up bowls like the Pecan Bowl

NCAA 2001.

I happened across the game in a collection of old cases that were gifted to me. I never had any interest in football, or sports in general at this point in my life, but I was bored so I fired it up. I figured — at the very least — it might help me connect with my father who was a life-long fan. I instantly fell in love with sport and have been fascinated with it ever since.

I don't remember the name of the game but it was one with Marshall Faulk on SDSU. I think they were the only non-big name school included in the game.

College Football's National Championship by Sega for the Genesis. I think it was 1994. I preferred Sega's football games to EA's back then.

Eventually moved on to Bill Walsh/College Football USA and then NCAA. Played Sony's NCAA Gamebreaker a bit too in the late 90s.

I can still remember looking at one of the gaming magazines at Kroger in the summer of 1997 and seeing a preview of NCAA 98 with the checkerboard end zones for Tennessee. I was so pumped.

CFNC on Genesis was probably one of my most enjoyable football experiences of the 1990s. I still have it and my Sega. I have thought of pulling it out some time, but I don’t want reality to ruin the nostalgia.
