Disguised Coverages are great, what about the same type of system for offense?
As we know, coverage shells are coming to Madden 25(and CFB25) and are a way to have your defense aligned how you want while also allowing you the flexibility to disguise your coverage. It's been a requested feature forever and we're finally getting it.
It's features like this that allow the user more control over how their team plays in an authentic manner that make the game really feel immersive and fun. It's also nice to see a defensive feature in a series that has heavily skewed towards favoring the offense and mostly up****** that side of the ball.
Ironically, I now want to take inspiration from the feature and think of ways that we can have similar creative freedom on the offensive side of the ball. Yes, I think the game skews too offensive-sided and defense is in need of some revamping and straight up buffing, but it's also fun to just imagine ways to improve the game.
I think it would be great to see a feature like coverage shells on the offensive side of the ball that allows the user to select the motion(s) they want pre-snap. It would work similarly to how the coverage shells system works where you pick the formation, then move the Right Thumbstick left or right to scroll through the list of shells, except this time, you're scrolling through different types of motion.
I think this system would be more complex than the coverage shells system is since those are much more static and the types of motion one could have are significantly more varied and the formation variety would also complicate it even further, but I do think it is about time the way we structure our play calls sees attention. It's been nearly the same system for the entire life of the series. The defensive side of the ball is finally getting change with the shells, so it would be nice to see that on the offensive side as well.
I can see situations where you are in an Online Franchise playing a buddy and are having some success running duo, but want to keep your friend on his toes, so you use this proposed system to add in a jet or orbit motion to mess with his eyes so that you can run duo a little more effectively. I can see the system being setup to where you can have it pre-configured to have your slot WR motion in towards the line before stopping and turning around at full speed at the snap for a quick flat route resulting in a potential open TD that was schemed up completely by the user and wasn't a set play in the playbook.
Ultimately, I'd love to see the series one day move towards a modular play call system on both sides of the ball. On defense, you'd select the front, any line stunts, the coverage shell, and then the actual coverage itself. It would be a blend of how NFL 2k used to have it plus with how Madden 25 will have it with the coverage shell.s
On the offensive side of the ball, I'd love to see us be able to select the formation, then the concept we're running, then tack on any pre-snap motion we wanted along with other options like taking a basic Floods pass play but adding in a play fake with a naked rollout to it if your heart desired.
I'm rambling on now(what a surprise for one of my posts), but a modular system would allow users to go as simple or as complex as they wanted and that creative freedom is something I think is especially healthy for the game and is a way to give users a sort of on the fly play creator. For those still wanting a ****** experience, they'd just pick the formation and set play just like they do now and not have to worry about all the other options. For those users like myself who love the X's and O's side of the game, it would be a blast to be able to pick a formation, the concept, potentially select a motion for set dressing, or to actually get a pre-snap read or alignment advantage at the snap, and then also mix it in with other options like a play fake, naked boot, etc.
I think the coverage shells is a great feature and I am so happy to see it added. I hope it is a sign of EA looking into expanding on play calling. I'd love to at a minimum see a similar system for offense where you can select some pre-snap motions to run on about any given play, but it would be amazing if this was the first step towards EA having both sides of the ball having completely modular play calling that could cater towards both the ****** crowd that wants a simple game along with those wanting a more complex game from the X's and O's side, and then everyone in between also.
