Old School Chat Rooms

Who here remembers the days of AOL chat rooms, AIM and other chats as such? If you're not aware, they were basically how Discord is now, except a lot more trolling and people trying to hook up lol. I still have friends that I talk to on occasion from those even to this day.

Re: Old School Chat Rooms

I stayed on AOL much longer than I had any business of doing so. I can't remember when I first got a cable modem ('02 maybe?), but I still logged on to AOL for a few years after that it seems.

I didn't do too many chat rooms, but I would instant message all the time.

That’s how I started downloading MP3s. This was before Napster, I would be given a list of MP3 from emails in AOL and I would serve them with a program in chat rooms. Pretty interesting way of pirating back in the day .

I was the first guy to burn cds and I would make money selling cds.

I'm old so I remember when you had to tell everyone not to pick up the phone because you were chatting online.

We had a second line specifically so we could log onto AOL. "Line 2" we called it.

Had a guy on AIM who would do that. If I couldn’t find it through my own means, I’d ask and he’d deliver.

AIM was the main form of communication for my youth (early-mid 2000s), didn’t have a cell phone until ‘06 and wasn’t using text messages (only had so many on the plan! Lol) then. I did end up using AIM on one of the early phones, too. Seems redundant today but made sense back then.

So many witty away messages. Well, I thought they were… lol

Re: Old School Chat Rooms

Ah, AIM. I miss the summers, spending time at the beach and then coming home to try to stay in touch with girls I met. We would exchange home numbers and AIM usernames and make promises we didn't know we wouldn't keep. This was before texting. Oh, young naive love, and puberty and hormones kicking life into overdrive.

It’s wild to consider how far we have come since then when comparing that timeframe to other societal advancements and revolutions.
