Re: NEED FIELDING FORMULAS BADLY

The best formula I have come up with (although it's not perfect) is off of baseball reference and the defensive stats it provides. Normally anything around + or - 12 from league average regarding fielding % or range is top/bottom. So a guy with a + 12 (say .962 fld % and league average is a .950) would be in the 90's for sure for that year. If a guy is at .938 then they are bottom of the barrel with fielding for that year. Range works similarly, but it's up to you if you want to represent range with only throw power and accuracy or if you want to take into account their stolen bases, doubles, etc.... to see if speed factors into it. Outfield assists can be figured differently, since assists a kind of subjective, but if a guy has double digits every few years or led the league even once in the OF they most likely have a good arm, and are accurate. It may differ in the IF but unless a guy is a gold glover or know for a strong/weak arm where stats don't tell a story, there really is no surefire method without scouting reports. All the defensive statistical numbers do is provide the creator with a base for consistency, which is about all you can ask for. That's my take at least, but using career stats help paint a good picture of what kind of defensive player a guy was is you want to take it a bit further.

EDIT: Catching stats are similar, just base the stats on the league average or see if anything is in bold, which indicates that player led the league in that category. Throwout % has a league average so that should help. Passed balls should be looked at in comparison to how many innings they caught as well.
