There’s probably a logic here but I don’t get it. When I try to resign players during the season, it says I’m $18m over the cap. That’s next year’s money, I assume, since it’s for extensions. Anyway, I can’t resign anyone.

Then the year flips during the offseason, the players become free agents, and I have $18m in cap space and sign the same players as FA that I wasn’t able to extend.

Nobody retired. I didn’t cut anyone. My deficit just becomes a surplus when the league year flips.

You may have had a dead money cap hit clear in the offseason.

But wouldn’t that be for the current year? Why would that prevent me from signing extensions?

as i understand it. dead cap can be current and next year. if you cut a 7th round pick before preseason, at draft recap i think all monies from all 4 years come from current cap. if do in preseason then current year goes against current year cap and years 2/3/4 go against next years cap? or am i wrong?

I don’t know but I play with the bills and in year one, they have like 20 players set to become FA. I can’t sign a single one, because it says I’m $18m over the cap. Then the calendar flips and I have $18m free space and can sign those same players as FA.

I didn’t cut or trade anyone of significance. And this is as soon as the league year changes, not during the draft recap.

Same for me and my buddy. Im using the Dolphins & he has the Cowboys, no $$$ to resign players

It might also be your rollover cap space. That doesn't become available for re-signing until after the season, because you haven't finalised this season's spend until that point.
