How was Franchise Mode this year?

All I see is the main franchise thread up top and it seems to be all about people telling their franchise story. I was hoping to get some feedback on how this year's version turned out. I still have MLB '20 on ps4. Was waiting for them to add an expansion mode to upgrade, but I have the itch a little bit. I got a ps5 for 2k23 Eras mode (pretty great overall) and might get 2k24, but am really hoping MLB steps it up.

What are your impressions 6 months in? All I remember them hyping up is the new draft system. Is it any good? Is it still the same mode otherwise?

Overall the mode is the same. The biggest overhaul was the draft. The draft day experience is really well done as is the signing period afterwards where you have a bonus pool and can over pay or under pay slot value. Scouting is well done except for only being able to access once a week. I’m hoping next year we can at least view the prospects whenever we want even if only assign scouts once a week.

The schedule has been changed to balanced schedule and playoffs updated. I personally think the logic for trades and roster building is well done. I’m currently in my 5th year. Presentation within franchise mode (stat pop ups, commentary, and ticker) is also very well done

Yeah I like it. The next improvement I would like to see is to staff. Let us customize the appearance and attributes of staff members like we can for players so we can have create classic managers/coaches or make a guy look like a recently retired player and watch him rise up the ranks to be a manager.

It’s not vastly different than recent years. The new draft is a nice change and I think has surpassed NHL as the best scouting & drafting system of the big 4 sports games. If minor legacy issues bothered you before, they will bother you again in 23. If you’ve been able to look past those, you should have fun again in 23.

Re: How was Franchise Mode this year?

Not so much franchise mode but some general thoughts.

I wish they would have expanded on the exterior shots that we get on a couple of stadiums that we got at the beginning. I was hoping we would have had some more through patches during the season. It will be interesting if they had a couple more for 2024 or if we would get. the complete set. Even if some stadiums just had still shots of the exterior diring pregame or in between innings. The live shots are cool but probably wouldn’t necessarily need it in all 30 stadiums.

I am in the playoffs now and I am disappointed that we still don’t get the score bug ticker during playoff games. I would like to see the score of the other matchups or news. You don’t really see what is happening around the playoffs unless you go look between games. A big missed opportunity in the presentation.

They never had this so it’s just a suggestion and it’s not major but to be able to have the catcher sometimes be able to tag the batter on drop third strike. In real life, the batter doesn’t run to first on EVERY drop third strike. Especially if the catcher catches it on a bounce.

For the new draft and scouting; I hope they expand it and improve on it instead of just adding it and forget it until it gets stale 4 years from now.

Re: How was Franchise Mode this year?

Comparing 23 to 20 for me comes down to a few things…

The hitting engine. I think most people without argument would agree 20 & 23 are hands down the best two hitting engines. With that being said, I personally prefer 23’s. I’ve seen almost every type of hit I can think of and feels like no two balls are ever hit exactly the same. Every time I play I see something new and I’ve put in almost 400 hours now into franchise.

The fielding this year compared to 20 or any year for that matter is light years better. It’s so smooth on the PS5 and players actually feel like the have weight this year. They can’t just go from a full sprint to throwing the ball without repositioning their body.

The stat overlays and presentation in general is the best it’s ever been in my opinion. I see more stat overlays and pop ups then I’ve seen in any iteration of the game.

The 3D Audio on the PS5 is just a thing of beauty in this game. When you hit that perfect perfect, there’s nothing like it in any other sports game. Feels amazing and sounds amazing.

The amount of face scans compared to 20 is substantial. I believe starting last year or the year before they started doing face scans on minor leaguers. So you rarely see a guy without a face scan, though many do need updates.

Lastly the overall smoothness of the game is just unmatched on 23. I honestly can’t remember having a single frame drop. It’s a steady 60 fps and 4k at all times . And if you have the right monitor you can even get 120 fps.

So for me I would pick 23, it’s creeping up on the highest hours played of any MLBTS for me and any game period for that matter. If I had to put a number on it at this exact moment. I would give 23 a 9/10 and 20 an 8/10.

Re: How was Franchise Mode this year?

I'm an XSX user, so while I dabbled in The Show last year, it never really grabbed me like 23 has.

By grab, I mean I've played all 162 games and I'm at Game 7 of the NLCS with my Cardinals. I made two minor trades during the season, which were good for both teams and the draft improvements are excellent.

After all of those games, I'm still seeing new animations. The variety of outcomes is like no sports game I've ever played and the playoff presentation brings back memories of being at past Cardinal playoff games.

I just turned 52 and this game is the best sports game I've ever played, and I've been playing since Atari football. Doesn't matter if I win or lose, it's realistic, believable and I lose myself into my baseball world.

Welcome to the family. I remember having those same feelings when I came to the series in MLB11. I’ve only ever done the 162 grind twice, both before I was a parent, but they remain among my best gaming memories.

Like anything else in life, familiarity breeds contempt, and it’s easy for us veterans to nitpick the little things that annoy us. I enjoy positive perspectives like yours as they help reset my own to just focus on the fun.
