What are the differences between the two? Which is better? Do the patches update preexisting online franchises?

From my understanding with online you can get certain updates a little faster than in offline, and obviously with online you can play with other friends to if you wanted. One of the downsides with online franchise is if you lose connection to the internet or if EA servers are down (which happens a lot) then you can't play your games.

What I have found is that online simulates a lot better and more realistically than offline. Which is obviously important as all other games in the league outside of your teams are simulated.
