M23 - am I doing autosubs wrong?

I've utilized autosubs like the sliders on this sub say..and my starters will play the first series and then sit the rest of the game.

Is there a "proper" way to set up autosubs?

It's the progressive fatigue issue. Your players get too tired to play. It hits the AI teams too.
Turn it off for future seasons, but that won't help now as your player fatigue is looked in it's current state.
You could try dropping the sub thresholds to 0/1, and lowering the fatigue slider to 0
