Vision cone couldve been amazing expanded on

No one talks about this but the fan base reaction to the vision cone was the downfall of madden QB play. It was an amazing idea, allowed the best QBs to stand out more by their vision, gave more head movement, forced players to not just run around backwards and throw passes, and it actually made QB awareness matter in madden

It also could be turned off, when this was taken out, QBs got gimicy again and is why nothing matters when it comes to QB play

The stupid fanbase protested it and madden got rid of it due to that, and now the only stats that matter are accuracy to an extent

Wouldve been great to expand on vision cone where some QBs vision could grow a bit when on the run, someone like Brady couldve had his vision cone decreased when on the run while someone like Allen or Hurts could increase when running but every QBs would decrease when running backwards

Punters would have a very very limited to non existent QB vision cone, QBs like Willis would be very small to force a one read type of playing style, Rodgers would have a half the field sized vision cone

This couldve also been incorporated into every faze of madden. RBs couldve had one where they wouldnt be able to cut to the side as well based on their vision, it would massively slow down or something, WRs who were average couldve had issues tracking the ball, OL would miss blitzing defenders based on their vision while great OL would pick up on this, safeties would lose some of the field when playing zone, CBs wouldnt track the ball or break on the ball based on their vision cone (someone not that good would only focus on the receiver while good dbs would see the whole field and break on some passes)

For instance, say you throw a pass to a receiver who has a big vision cone, they would be able to track the ball anywhere and be able to catch overthrown passes, sideline passes, get feet in bounds. While a lower vision cone receiver would let the ball sail over their head, let the ball hit their feet, look over the wrong shoulder on deep balls

This wouldnt have to be something that would be seen, but incorporated in the actual player's ability. It could be invisible, it doesnt have to be visual, maybe pre snap it would be cool. Itd allow you to know what direction of passes to use for certain receivers. If you know their vision cone is limited, you would be less inclined to throw directional passes, when it was big, you had free game. Running backs you knew you had to run strait behind the blockers in the hole with a limited cone while someone like Saquan would be able to see the whole field without any lag to his running

This was something that could've altered maddens future, yet was removed. If expanded, this wouldve been a great feature for all positions

Re: Vision cone couldve been amazing expanded on

It's three biggest issues were that there were only three levels (sliver, average, huge), the clunkiness of the controls, and the on-screen mess (There's a reason the most popular settings for MLB The Show is A&S's clean-screen settings.)

So I'd have addressed these as follows (the vision cone was long gone by the time I was there and had already left a bad taste in anyone's mouth, so I was loath to even bring it up. Plus I wasn't on gameplay.)

1.) Graduate the size of the cone logarithmically from 50-99 AWR. This means that the difference between a 99 and a 98 would be bigger than the difference between a 50 and a 60, so as your QB approaches elite, you're seeing bigger and bigger gains.

2.) Have the cone "previewed" during the walk up to the line of scrimmage and on the presnap "LT" and "RT" play preview screens, but have it fade as the QB settles under center. You have an idea in your head how big it is, but it's not actually on screen during gameplay.

3.) This part is multifaceted. First off, by default the vision cone is dead center. However, you can elect to center it on any receiver prior to the snap. There will be an on-screen indicator as to where your vision is focused (Yes, the defense can see it, that's a feature not a bug).

Next, the cone is controlled with right analog, and it has 8 points. Quick flick moves it. Up is looking right down the center of the field, down-right and down-left are the flats, down is the backfield generally (will automatically focus on a screen or swing back, but also increases the QB's break-sack ability).

Of course, this would have to be tested, but it's a lot better than the left trigger/analog/button Mortal Kombat combo we had to do before. One quick flick.

I really miss seeing those QBs actually turn toward their targets in the pocket. Just made them feel so much more alive.

Re: Vision cone couldve been amazing expanded on

QB play is underwhelming in EA football. Has been for a long time. The vision cone was a great feature, simply because we could move the defenders by looking them off and as OP stated it made AWR matter.

Footwork is awful also. 3, 5, and 7 step drops should be important for timing and rhythm on various routes as well as vision, especially when it comes to play actions. This is what currently makes the PA pass game so unrealistic and dangerous because we the user can still see our receivers. The receiver icons or QB vision should disappear for a half second or so as the QB executes the fake, while taking his eyes off the defense.

Like many areas of EA football, the play call screen and the way we call plays needs needs a massive overhaul. There are so many neglected areas and opportunities for this game to be amazing.

EA, I’m done wishing, so I won’t post any lists or give out anymore innovative ideas. But EA Sports devs, you can PM me if you really want to flip the sports gaming industry on its head.

Madden has hidden the receiver icons during playaction animations for as long as I can remember playing the game.

Am I missing something here?

I'm generally supportive of the idea that playing QB should be more difficult for the gamer if they use a lower-rated QB. Ie choosing to roll with a guy like Malik Willis should be a significant test of one's stick skills as compared with a steady veteran.

That said, the vision cone was a bridge too far in controlling the QB's arms, feet, and head with the controller. I think it would need to take advantage of something like motion sensing in the controller to be viable.

Further, I think a lot of that is already reflected in the momentum factors, so adding the difficulty of working the cone while also dealing with crowd noise making your routes impossible to read or screwing up your audibles, or cutting off downfield receivers has a potential to get out of hand. I think gameplanning plus momentum plus precision passing is already breaking the game's balance.

I loved the cone, but if it doesn’t return, I’d love to see an option to have rookie and lower AWR QBs have effects like shaky cam, distorted play art, etc. ***off the bat*** until they complete some throws or until they progress to higher AWR and then the game “slows down” for them.

Re: Vision cone couldve been amazing expanded on

Whilst it was a bit much for the OG controllers, in the modern age of controllers that can react to the positioning of the controller, it would work in a way of moving the vision cone with the tilt of the controller. Trying to manipulate the pocket with LS, move the cone with RS and use that same thumb to press the WR Icon would be grim, but being able to use the controllers ability to sense movements would mean a simple tilt of the controller could look a safety off whilst stepping away from an interior rusher and then allow you to snap back to that side of the field quickly to see the throw to make.

The vision cone across all positions would revolutionise the game, so I hope 2k or maximum football consider it

Neither first-party controller for the XBOX Series X/S — the standard or Elite — has an internal accelerometer which would allow the handset to respond to changes to its real world 3D position.

Madden NFL is a multiplatform game which is often developed for the least common denominator. It is unlikely that EA Sports would support long-term any feature which the official hardware of both consoles cannot support. For example, voice command play calling via the XBOX One Kinect and game analysis via XBOX One SmartGlass were dropped just as quickly as they were introduced.
