Post your Custom League Set Up

NHL 23 is quite rightly taking some pain for the copy/paste job and issues around presentation. However the custom league feature is a nice addition and renaming Conferences/Divisions is a nice touch. I thought it would be a good idea for people to post their set up to inspire/give ideas to others.

Here's mine (a 2022/early 90s hybrid set up):

28 NHL Teams (14 East/14 West):

East:

Patrick Division:

NYR
NYI
NJD
PHI
PIT
WAS
BUF

Adams Division:

TOR
MON
TB
BOS
HAR (Created team - Whalers have replaced Carolina using their roster)
QUE (Created team - Nordiques have replaced Florida using their roster)
OTT

West:

Norris Division:

DET
MIN
DAL
WPG
STL
CHI
COL

Smythe Division:

ARI
ANA
SJ
LAK
VAN
CGY
EDM

- 82 game schedule
- 14 games v opposite conference (only 1 game a season versus the opposite conference)
- 36 divisional games (3 home/3 away against the other 6 in your division)
- 32 games versus the other division ( 4 or 5 games against each team)

Play Off Qualification is the old system of the top 8 in each conference with a re-seeding each round to ensure the highest seed plays the lowest.

2 pts for a win
OT is 5 v 5
1 point for a tie after OT
0 points for a loss

As you can see the 90s flavour comes in the form of Hartford and Quebec, the ties in regular season games, conference heavy schedule and the play off format.

Seattle, Florida, Carolina, Nashville, Vegas and Columbus are out.

I'm currently testing it out and all looks ok, the schedule is working well.

Re: Post your Custom League Set Up

Is this only for franchise mode or can you do this in season mode as well?

What happens to all the players on the teams you left out? Are they available in free agency?

It’s ridiculous that this is only for franchise mode. This would be perfect for historic roster fans. Much like nba 2k era mode. I cannot understand why EA makes certain decisions?

Any players on NHL teams not included will be missing unless you move any you would prefer to Free Agents before starting your franchise.

Re: Post your Custom League Set Up

Gonna be doing something just like you OP, with the smaller # of teams + ties + old division & conference names, etc.

Will take me a while to get going bc I only have time to create one team per day, North Stars and Nords are done, still need to make Whalers and I also like to rebrand Vancouver so they rock the red black & yellow scheme.

I’m absolutely stoked I’ve wanted to do this ever since they started letting us create teams.

Good to know, I had the same question. What did you end up doing? I was wondering if maybe jacking the salary cap way up (or turning it off) would be a good idea considering all that extra talent (potentially) sitting around.

I moved about 4/5 players from the teams not in my league to Free Agency (the big name players like Eichel for example).

Left the salary cap settings as default.

A couple of the star players were picked up by teams before the season started, the rest presumably not as teams had no space. I expect them to be signed the following summer once contracts expire etc
