Preseason Week 1 Takeaways:
Atlanta Falcons 14-33 Miami Dolphins

De'Von Achane was one of the highlights in the preseason win

The Miami Dolphins won their preseason opener at home vs. the Atlanta Falcons.

Here are three takeaways from the 33-14 victory:

Defense, LB Anthony Walker Jr stand tall

The defensive unit set the tone in the victory, limiting the Falcons to one offensive touchdown while recording five sacks and two turnovers off of fumbles. The defense also made three stops in the red zone, including one at the end of the first half to force the clock to expire before the Falcons could score to get within reach and another that led to an 80-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Walker Jr was the defensive player with that score and he finished the game with a game-high 12 total tackles and two fumble recoveries, demonstrating the type of focus and determination that might just allow him to take the next step in his career this year.

One question that remains, however, is the status of outside lineacker Shaquil Barrett, who did not suit up due to mysterious reasons that were not clarified postgame by head coach Mike McDaniel.

De'Von Achane impresses in RB2 role

Achane ran well for 66 yards with the second offensive unit, averaging 7.3 yards a carry on his nine attempts in addition to making two catches for 21 yards. His speed caused Atlanta all sorts of problems, especially on runs to the outside, but he also showed he could run between the tackles on his short-yardage touchdown. If he keeps this up, he might really push incumbent halfback Raheem Mostert for the starting role.

Mike White struggles as QB2

Mike White somewhat surprisingly beat out Skylar Thompson for the back-up quarterback spot during training camp, but questions about that position will abound after his poor performance.

White looked out of sorts during his time on the field, struggling to make his reads en route to throwing three interceptions to eagle-eyed Falcons free safety Dane Cruikshank. Those picks resulted in Thompson checking into the game earlier than planned and could have allowed Atlanta to get back into things if not for the resolute defense, leaving plenty of concern for McDaniel with the regular season fast approaching.

Dolphins Trade Disgruntled Linebacker Shaquil Barrett To Buccaneers

Miami received a 2025 third-round pick in exchange

The Miami Dolphins' marriage with outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett (81 OVR) was a short one.

The Dolphins traded Barrett to the Buccaneers in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The 31-year-old Barrett, who did not dress in the preseason opener due to mysterious reasons, was unhappy with his role after joining the Dolphins for training camp following his spring arrival as a free agent.

"The reports about his feelings with us were ultimately true," said Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. "He did not want to be here, and we do not want to keep anyone here who does not want to be here even if we would have liked him to maintain as part of our plans.

"We feel we got a good return for him, and we will have another move to announce soon."

Dolphins Reunite With Free Agent Linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah

The veteran returns for a fifth season in South Florida

The Miami Dolphins made it clear they had a move lined up in the aftermath of the Shaquil Barrett trade.

Well, that move has brought back a familiar face.

The Dolphins have signed free agent outside linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah (75 OVR) to a one-year deal worth $4.75 million. Ogbah had spent the last four seasons in Miami but was cut in the spring to create more cap space, some of which has now been used to sign him as a replacement for recently-traded pass rusher Shaquil Barrett.

"This has been home for so long so I am delighted that we could work something out for my return," said the 30-year-old Ogbah. "I have been staying ready, working out on my own and honestly I feel good. I cannot wait to get going."

Dolphins Add Free Agent Quarterback Ryan Tannehill

The veteran signs up for a second stint with the AFC East team

Concerns at backup quarterback after some shoddy preseason play has led the Miami Dolphins to a surprise reunion with a recognizable figure.

The Dolphins have agreed to a deal with free agent Ryan Tannehill (70 OVR), the 36-year-old quarterback who previously played with the organization from 2012-2018 after being selected by Miami as an early first-round pick. Tannehill signed a one-year deal worth $1.95 million, and is expected to fill the primary backup quarterback role behind starter Tua Tagovailoa.

"I am buzzing to be back here in Miami," said Tannehill. "It might be in a different role and I will have to pick a different number, but I look forward to helping this team in any way that I can."
