Good read. I've thoroughly enjoyed both games this year, but I'd probably give PES a slight nod on the gameplay end, it just feels right most of the time and I love the wide range of goal variety. I'd love to see the dribbling refined a bit, and they could also stand to implement a better shielding system, but Konami made huge improvements from last year so I'm excited about PES 2018 already. I am a little skeptical of the 'Adaptive AI' however. I don't score crazy amounts of goals or anything, but I've been able to consistently score on Superstar and I don't get terribly deep into mid game tactical adjustments.

FIFA is better than a lot of people give it credit for this year. There's something about the movement of the players that bothers me sometimes, but overall I like the pace and I generally get realistic stats playing 20 minute games (World Class), which is ideal for my tastes. I've enjoyed the feel of the game after the patch as well, which is a huge relief considering past efforts. Shooting and passing both feel better to me, and the CPU isn't playing Barca style tiki taka all game.

I'm gonna play sooooooooo much of these 2 games, right up until next year's games drop.

I agree that FIFA requires additional attention to maintaining shape while switching on defense; however, I find FIFA's depth of value. Little things like player movement on throw-ins or larger ones like the clock never stopping, only slowing to real time are great additions. Not to mention the frustration of getting PES' option file just right. I really hoped there would be an online roster share-like setup, where we could just find the top-rated file on a server, click download, and play. The whole finding a file online and making some additional adjustments, and the league/cup symbols thing is something else we have to do, is overly complicated. The lack of semi-consistent foul calls bothers me too.

When you learn how to play PES, see how much depth PES has over Fifa things like presentation mean little.
PES is a clear winner here.

The only thing "killing" PES is the lack of licensing; however, mods/patches on PC and PS4 have nearly nullified this. For offline players, PES is by far superior.

I'm already so sick of FIFA 17. It's SO unrealistic on the pitch compared to PES for offline play, and I LOVED the last two or three FIFA games compared to PES. But PES has regained the crown this year for me.

Messi can get his pocket picked just as easily as a backup striker from Brentford in FIFA. Plus all teams play basically the same style, another longtime FIFA weakness. And how often per game does the CPU team put the ball into the air on passes? Once? Maybe twice? Everything is on the floor.

We would have the perfect soccer game if EA could handle everything off the pitch, including licensing, and have Konami do all the on-pitch AI programming. That would be nirvana.
