I'm not saying the ratings are perfect but considering all that goes into team and player performances (coaching strategies, team tendencies, player tendencies, individual attributes, badges, etc) I'd say 2k does a pretty good job.

I also don't go through and look a ratings for each player but I don't think I've come across a situation where a player is performing way above or below there capability. And even then this happens in real life from time to time. In the finals Curry didn't look like the same dominant player he was during the regular season. There are also plenty of instances where players perform much better than what is expected.
Curry played like Tyreke Evans in 2k16.

Lol if that's your claim ok but that has nothing to do with rating. Curry was what a 96 in 2k16? If not higher. He was one of, of not the, most difficult players to replicate because of how he was playing last year. He might not have played exactly like himself but he was difficult to cover last year and it was possible to play as him and do Curry like things. Not sure what else 2k could have done with him that wouldn't result in people throwing their controller because he was unguardable.

No it doesn't because it isn't a sum it is a weighted algorithm which subjectively weights specific skills as more important that others. Like I said 2K could decide tomorrow to make offensive rebounding factor more into pg rating and free throw rating less and all pg overall ratings would change while the players performance itself would not change one iota.

The proper way to evaluate talent is to look at how the players measure in the skills you need for the role they will have on your team. Just because 2K puts in that say 3PT shooting is the biggest factor in a pg's overall rating doesn't mean that it is important for the pg on my team.

In the end it doesn't matter a lot of the time because the better player will often be higher in all ratings across the board. But when they aren't it is very possible that you will be better off picking up a player with a lower overall rating if his skill ratings are higher in the skills that you actually need for that role on your team.
