My initial impressions :

I'll have some video impressions, but based on that P1 v CPU video, I'd give it a 7/10.

+ Flow of the match is back to a mix of compressed and decompresses (expands) nicely.

+ Proper width of pitch is matched by the close down speed of players due to their positioning.

+ Ball Physics look quite good, floats in the air much nicer.

+ Save animations are very nice.

+ Defensive covering is not locked into their position (i.e. a CB will go and cover the RB/LB if needed).

+ Proper step up to meet the attackers (unlike).

+ Not as chaotic off the ball.

- I'm still seeing the sprint back and forth off the ball by defenders and midfielders. Several times the outside midfielder, or back, would allow their teammate to overlap by simply sprinting back to their designated spot. Does not look natural, but I understand the intent.

- Shots are all on target by the CPU. I know these are higher quality teams, and CPU was on Superstar, so take that with a grain of salt.

- Loose balls in the air still don't feel "loose", it looks like it is still on a rope to a destined force field of P1 or CPU. This is evident by corner clearances that drop their way to an attacker, much like all of PES and FIFA though - for a number of years actually.

- Deflections off of tackles only go about 1 foot away. IRL, deflections or tackles will allow the ball to sputter off into become a 50/50 ball. I did not see many of these types of occurrences, and that does continue to concern me with the Fox engine. The reason it does is because the harp right now is on First Touch control, well if you have a terrible first touch control, that ball should be sputtering several feet away, or even slipping under your foot, right? If you take the same low rating at First Touch, and pair that up with 50/50 tackle, there needs to be some "force" within those tackles - not just a simple control of the ball as a result - which is what I saw the majority of.

- Lastly is the forward passing. The passing seems to be very forward-forward-forward, that's the build up I saw. It was not much side to side, and when it did go to the side, it goes forward. I'll have to take some more time to look at the movement off the ball, but it looks very direct. While we love PES 4-6, those games were also very forward and direct, so if that was the goal - it's been accomplished, but I do hope there is some more proper build up, and less frantic play to score a goal as quick as possible.
Some good analysis Matt. Huge difference is if you watch a video in 60fps vs 24fps. The 24 looks so much faster but even at 60fps it looks like I might need to dial it down too -1. Also makes a huge difference on who is playing in video, that vid you posted was Asim and Thomas Broad and is why it looks so much better. Both are actually good defenders so it plays much more like a sim soccer game. Excited to try it out and especially play against the computer on superstar (any videos out there for that?).

Wait that wasn't the Asim one I saw. Here it is (retweeted by Jose). Looks decent. Obviously playing it is what will really matter.

The developers are too gameplay focussed. The menu's are still old skool, I dont seethe replay stuff overhaul they were talking about and still no cutscene replay highlight replays from goals or tricks. Also no player stats in-game ticker and such. You get a pretty nice playing game, but thats it. Nothing else about PES gives me that match day atmosphere that Fifa does so well. They are really stuck in the PES'ed and it could be such a great alternative to Fifa even without all the big licenses. Barca deal money would have been better spend on broadening the development team and give consumers what we see on a real match day. Wake up, gameplay only is not enough nowadays.

To me this is the biggest problem with the game and the one that really stands out... itīs so easy and fast to get out of the defence and make 4 or 5 consecutive pin point forward passes and be on the offense...

Yeah, TTB talked about the replay overhauls and tbh, there were some crap replays mixed in with some adequate one's. I think menu's are probably easier to tweak before the game comes out but I doubt they'll be upgraded or deliver on the promises they said. Last year (or 2 years ago) they said they overhauled them when all they really did was make the main menus into tiles (looked good IMO) when all the sub-menus were the same and still looked like crap AND had language that didn't make sense.

I haven't watched all of the vids yet but the one Matt posted I saw several times where the CPU passed back and sideways. The problem (it's not really a problem though lol) is that the Barca user was blindly chasing the ball opening up passing lanes that the CPU took advantage of. I'd rather the CPU be more direct than pass the ball around the back just for the sake of it (PES 15).



One thing that immediately jumped out at me was the skipping animation from PES 16 has been dramatically toned down. You know, the one where anyone, including defenders would skip over a mistimed challenge, bypassing what should have been a foul, like they were 2014-15 Eden Hazard or any year Messi.

I was thinking more on the user side. The CPU is ok i guess, itīs the easyness of the user controlled team in making 4 or 5 passes in a row, with deadly accuracy and speed. Maybe he had the pass assistance at the max level?

Oh ok. I can't make any judgement off how users play, especially in a short half demo where they only have a limited time with the game. Most ppl in that situation are gonna play all out attack but yeah, they def had pass assistance in default 1/2. You can tell by how the passes all went to their intended target.

Many people have stated that the default pass assistance is a little too easy and that it seems better at level 1.
