Re: Dunk ratings

I did a short series of articles last year based on Dunk rating. Could work on a new one w/ end of season data. 2K barely updated dunk ratings except for a few select players.

A quick rundown of a handful as an example

% = % of FGA
92 Russell Westbrook (3.6%) - 48 Dunks (-0.8%)
88 Zach LaVine (6.2%) - 39 Dunks (NA)
86 John Wall (3.7%) - 32 Dunks (NC)
78 Damian Lillard (2.4%) - 30 Dunks (+0.3%)
75 Derrick Rose (0.6%) - 5 Dunks (NC from 2014; -1.1% from 2012)
73 Austin Rivers (2.6%) - 12 Dunks (+1.1%)
65 Tony Wroten (3.7%) - 14 Dunks (-0.1%)
60 Michael Carter-Williams (3.2%) - 27 Dunks (+0.3)
54 Lester Hudson (0.8% Career) - 2 Dunks Career
50 Marcus Smart (1.5%) - 6 Dunks (NA)
45 Jerryd Bayless (2.9%) - 15 Dunks (+1.9%)
40 Isaiah Canaan (0.0%) - 0 Dunks (NC) - Has never dunked in NBA career
30 Kyrie Irving (0.3%) - 4 Dunks (+0.1%)
27 Chris Paul (0.1%) - 1 Dunks (NC)
27 Isaiah Thomas (0.0%) - 0 Dunks (NA) - Has never dunked in NBA career
25 Tyler Ennis (1.4%) - 2 Dunks (NA)

Rose was one of the few players w/ a dunk rating edit (per usual, only the top players received any kind of edit). He had 86 out of the box (and his new rating is still way too high).

Westbrook went up 10 points which was pretty absurd given his actual production/ability, though the fact that he had a lower dunk rating out of the box than Derrick Rose didn't exactly pass the laugh test either.

You may recall LaVine had a 98 dunk rating last year out of the box. 2K nerfed that a bit but it's clear he was the best dunking PG by a large margin. The problem was he had too many dunks in traffic. PGs rarely dunk in traffic. That goes for guys like Westbrook, Wall, etc. Most of their dunks are uncontested on the fastbreak.

Bayless had a bad dunking year in 2014 and lost 24 points off his dunk rating. He since reverted back to a quality rate (playing minutes at off-guard helps, as he gets his share of alley-oops, rather than dunking off the dribble as 2K would have you believe PGs do it).

Apologies, I haven't been following the ratings reveals closely.

I like that idea, but you also have to give him a new badge (something like "Never Gives Up"). If he injures his right arm, he just stays on the game playing left handed.

Interesting. Personally (and I'm no ratings guys at all), I can't draw any conclusions from it yet because the sample sizes are small enough that they are really just suggestive, not conclusive, of anything. . . yet. They do raise questions, though.

For example, of the new attribute ratings systems is based off of an all time set of benchmarks for corresponding player behavior/stats, then, by adopting a more standard ratings philosophy, did something about the balance among positions change?

That is, did they discover that, for some reason, their past subjective ratings favored bigs too much? I would find that hard to believe having played the game a few years, but was that an outcome?

Or, as they reworked ratings by attribute, did they also try to benchmark past all time PER ratings against the game's OVR ratings, and as a result, try to rework the way they computed OVR? That is, did the OVR formula under the hood change this year in how it weights attributes by position? If so, why, and based on what?

Do they think that, by trying to become more standardized in ratings, that the game will now reflect the relative historical weakness of bigs overall in the league now? Or does the OVR rating suffer because bigs get fewer stats in today's game the way it is played?

It bears watching as we get the full league ratings. To me though it raises questions. It's hard to hold out past ratings as a standard for anything when they were already pretty. . . inconsistent, but if there's more of a standard now, it would be good to hear more about how the ratings were derived this year for OVR.

And as a Kincks fan, love the KP rating, but yeah, I mean. . . huh? Rookies are dart board to rate anyway, so apparently K-Pizzle has a fan in Mike Stauffer.

Nice work, Rashidi!

Reading is indeed fundamental.
Rashidi, I appreciate the valuable information you provide to OS. Nevertheless, the reason your messages aren't heard as clearly as they are written is due to your snobbish/arrogant remarks when they are unnecessary. The bolded above is a clear example man.

You attracts bees with honey, not vinegar.

I mean first of all it is a brand new rating system this year where legends set the bar. Not only do we not know how these ratings will play out but it should be obvious that rookies will be on the lower end.

Second even if the rating system was the same it is difficult to tell if a player's overall is accurate or not without playing. For the sake of argument let's say Kyrie Irving and Chris Paul had the same rating. They are still going to play completely different because of their play style amd strengths. Kyrie is more of a scoring point guard that makes his own shots where as Paul is more of a pass first guard that creates shots for other players, not to say he can't score as well.

Just because a player has a specific number rating doesn't mean it won't accurately portray his skillset. And if not at least we get constant roster updates and the ability to roster edit
how exactly does my comment make you laugh? im basically saying that overall doesnt matter and individual attributes determine how a player plays...
