Re: Madden NFL 16 Top 5 Running Backs

It does seem strange how inconsistent the rookies are compared to this list as far a speed. I just don't know what they go by when they make these ratings.

I actually like the lowered speed of this list. Must closer to how it should be. I'm a Cowboys fan but, Murray has had over rated speed for years. IMO 89 is better. I've watched almost every down of his NFL career and he gets caught from behind a lot. 94 speed was just crazy for him.

The problem is the rookies don't seem to be rated based on the same scale.

Then all the other ratings are just all over the place. Bell with 99 catch? I know he caught a lot of passes but, he has perfect hands? Maybe everything is position specific this year?

I'm not even saying I could do better. I would just like to know where they get the info for this stuff.

Can't wait for the season. No more Shady dancing around in the backfield getting stopped for 2 yard losses. Give it to Murray and watch him make one-cut & hit the hole

However, once again, 40 times do not equal speed. TOP END SPEED is how EA defines the SPD rating, not the 40 time. So, to end this debate, let's see how they SHOULD be in SPD.

Mariota = Green
Gordon = Red

According to the graphic below, Mariota reached a maximum velocity of 11.14 yds/sec in 2.92 seconds. Gordon reached 10.85 yds/sec in 2.99 seconds. This means that Mariota should actually have better SPD and ACC than Gordon, but Gordon fell off less to get to the 40 yard mark at the same time as Mariota. Therefore, Gordon would have better endurance/stamina.
So what you're saying is Gordon should be 87 -88 spd? You didnt answer my question then about it being justified then. And it doesnt end the debate like you wanted it to.

You know, I have done some real interesting research into how much speed players lose over the course of a career. I was pretty shocked to find that most NFL players who play at least 10 years only lose about a tenth off of a 40 during that time. That is a very small amount (like 2-3 SPD points in Madden). The dropoff is no where near what EA would leave us to believe.

Case in point: Donald Driver.

They guy ran a 4.45 in 1999 as a rookie. He stayed there until his time was modified to 4.47 in March of 2008, according to my data. That means he went 9 seasons before losing any speed at all. In May, 2008 that time was modified to 4.49, which held until June, 2011 where it was adjusted again to 4.56, where it stayed until his last recorded time in March of 2013.

That means that over the course of these 15 seasons, he only lost 0.11 seconds off of his 40 time. That would be about a 3 point SPD decrease but only after he completed 9 seasons first. The physical degradation is no where near what EA wants us to think it is.

Sure:

Charles reached a top velocity of 11.14 yds/second but did it at the 4.30 second mark, shortly before his 40 was completed. So Charles would have slower ACC, but higher SPD than Gordon.

Also, Charles dropoff in speed is very, very rare. His sprint endurance is elite, which speaks to why he was also a sprinter in college. The guy just doesn't slow down. I would be willing to bet that Charles breaks his big runs not because he is a ton faster than everyone else, but because he doesn't fall off as much as everyone else after 40 yards. It's pretty cool to see this.

Agree with those statements 100%.

Interesting research results.

Re: Madden NFL 16 Player Ratings - Top 5 Running Backs

I'm very impressed with EA's decision to lower running backs speed. In an ideal ratings system, Charles's 92 speed should be considered elite. I remember in NFL 2k3, Dante Hall's speed was 85. Running back ability should be based on a lot more than speed. I say great job EA.

Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones are most dumb owners/GM and vice president as Father and Son who let Demarco Murray go and signed with Eagles
