Re: Madden NFL 16 Gameplay Video (IGN)
I hate to bring up 2K, but EA needs to look at what they've done. Now, while I have problems with 2K on the court, 2K is the best model for sports games off the court. You play as a player, you get a storyline; as a GM, you can literally sit down with players to negotiate contracts; you have to manage egos and performance changes based on promises made to your team and the media.
Madden, to me, seems empty. There's no real storyline, just a cut-and-dry, laboring CCM. The way things are now, I would have lived with 2-3 years ago, or maybe even have been excited. But now? Yeah, I can lead a team to a Super Bowl and build up 'Legacy XP' and I can get some good games after fine-tuning a slider set put together by the good folks here at OS. After that, I have the draft, a bit under-played, but decent nonetheless--where I basically get 70% of my enjoyment as I move to later years.
But after that? Menus. Dry free agency where the only excitement is in trying to convince a string of ratings with no personality and presence that they should sign with me. No players struggling to get along. No struggles with players. No live press conferences asking interesting questions after games (their Q&A like twice per season doesn't quite count). Nothing, really, outside of football and the draft and when those two are all I can look forward to, I get burned out quick. That's what I think is missing from Madden--personality--and the sad thing is that it was there, once, back when they had Tony Bruno in 2005.
