MLB 15 The Show's Diamond Dynasty Disrupts the Market

If somebody is talking about sports games and what trends have changed them in the last five years, it would be easy to argue that virtual team building has been the trendsetter. Whether it's Ultimate Team (EA titles), or Diamond Dynasty (MLB The Show), or MyTeam (NBA 2K), or MyClub (PES) every major sports title has taken a stab at this mode.

And it's easy to see from both a business and consumer level why this has become a trend. There's plenty of money to be had here, and the modes are extremely popular.

At the end of the day, a ton of people like to build their own team, and just as many people like collecting things, or buying/selling things, or just opening packs of virtual cards to see what surprises are within.

In a lot of ways, many of these modes are not unlike Hearthstone or any other collectable card game (CCG for short). You usually want the best cards possible, and the idea of opening that next pack always has an allure.

But the interesting thing about Diamond Dynasty is that it decides to eschew as much of the noise as possible. And that's what I want to talk about after the jump.

Re: MLB 15 The Show's Diamond Dynasty Disrupts the Market

Great write up Chris.

DD has me hook line and sinker. I am playing more and more each and every day. I have "played" the market big time. Its stocks but with baseball cards and I love it.

I have been able to build my team with my initial bonus stubs from the Anniversary bonus's and flipping some key cards early. I also chipped up 2 times for $40 bucks and bought some stubs......to have some fun. And it certainly has been a wild ride, but I have settled my roster and am just buying some occasional packs and having the thrill of after game rewards and my stamp card pack. I took a big plunge last night to finish up some collections for legends I wanted in a bad way (Hershiser, McGriff and Clark) and getting my favorite pitcher in the game today with Bumgarner for 13K!

The mode is robust. And I have met players around the world who play the game the right way on DD and have expanded my friend list with a lot of great sim players.

Online has been a pure joy and has opened up this games modes for me in ways I never thought would happen.

Online is where it's at for MLB 15. Offline still rocks too. But wow....just having so much fun online now. It's drugs.

The good kind.

sounds interesting. i enjoy playing the market in NHL15 to a certain degree. i refuse to spend more than the extra $10 for the ultimate edition DLC, so finding deals and building a team is fun for a little while. eventually though the time adds up and i'm like "why am i not actually playing hockey?"

i hope the HUT app comes back next year, although i know that's pretty unlikely given the problems they had with FIFA app this year. ideally i'd like to work the market on/off during the day and just play hockey at night.

anyways back to DD. sounds interesting what they are doing, like it would cut down on the time spent in the auction house. overly stacked teams is a problem though - are there tournaments or some other way to play teams based on a max overall rating or payroll value?

Ultimate Team, My Team, Diamond Dynasty, MyClub, all these modes to me have something in common, I don't play any of them. I'm just not into fantasy make believe teams. I get sports games to play with authentic teams either online or offline and rarely do I ever go passed two seasons in a franchise because I can't stand for all the teams to have a bunch of generic players and bad trade logic being used by the cpu.

I like it a lot as well. But it's too time consuming to play the market. As a father of a 2 year old I barely have time to play games let alone play the market with cards. I'd like to see them create an app for the cards I'd have more time to play around on my phone or kindle. Also a better filter would be nice. Make it a little easier to find some deals.

I don't care for playing online with sports games but I am enjoying the card collecting aspect. I don't have time to mess around with markets, either.

I play all of them, and have spent much more money than I'm willing to admit.

The gold standard of completing collections is Madden UT. FIFA has an advantage over the variety of players, the kits, stadiums, etc, but doesn't do collections.

DD is fun and have played a few games, still hoping to complete my first team soon.

DD is all I've played and enjoy it. With the improved online play it's really the only game mode I play. The games are competitive and play well online. I'm not so much into the "card collecting" aspect of as I find that once you have say a 85+ rated player at a position it really doesn't matter what player you draw (at that position) after that because they'll never play on my roster. With a record of 38-24 I find it enjoyable, even up against rosters chalk full of ringers.
