I wouldn't be surprised if the old-guard was used for the PS3/360.
It may be similar to when NHL07 was released where the two games were completely different depending on which generation of console you had.

If this new engine, physics, commentary, etc can all run on the old generation then I fear NHL15 won't be as great as we want it to be.

There is a lot of mention about crowd models and them acting in a more realistic way. That sounds great, but I hope they also put a lot into the sounds of the crowds - ohhs, ahhs on close plays, booooo's, chants, cheering, standing during clutch moments (like I see in MLB 14) and so forth.

IF (meant as a big if) the physics are what they say they are, that will help. Another possible indirect improvement could come from uncompressed animations thanks to NG horsepower. It made a difference in games like Madden & FIFA, things were less awkward, twitchy, warpy... whatever you want to call it. Hopefully it helps the goalies seem more lifelike even before accounting for any other changes/improvements.

Yes this true, it will look pretty but if it does not have substance it will be a big let down. I really hope they can up that part of the game.

It's getting about the time for me to upgrade to next gen.

The only drawback for me on this list... the new commentary team. I absolutely HATE Mike Emerick and Olczy. Oh well... It is what it is I guess.

Anyone remember the great intro in NHL 11? Toews picks up the puck and goes one-on-one with Hiller. This was all computer generated and i remember thinking to myself this is what the next gen will be like. It was quite detailed with fabric physics on the jerseys in motion, the strides of momentum that Toews gained as each skate dug in the ice was so noticable. Before we see more, this is the closest thing to '15 so far.
