NBA 2K14 Hands-On Preview (Gamesradar)

Gamesradar has posted their NBA 2K14 hands-on preview.

Quote:
In NBA 2K13, you can’t really block dunks. You can foul and hope your opponent misses, but you lose either way, and risk a 3-point play. In 2K14, you can block dunks--we did so a couple of times, at one point using Paul George to spectacularly chase-down a James Harden fast-break. Lay-up and close shot blocking is more realistic too, with new animations making each denial look and feel intensely satisfying. We didn’t block everything in sight, though, so the balance seems pretty good at the moment.

There are loads of other defensive fixes too. Screens aren’t quite as devastating, so you can fight round them more realistically. There’s a new series of animations that see bigger defenders crashing into shot-takers on late blocks, knocking them both to the floor and causing more fouls on outside shots (if you’re careless). On the offense-side, we pulled off a couple of beautiful circus shots with Russell Westbrook that handed us valuable 3-point plays, and we noticed that auto-contest was less effective… so defense isn’t totally dominant this year.
Platform: Xbox 360 / PS3

Were we playing the same game this year?

Huhh???

Individual defense I can see this in the perspective of guards like Nick Young be able to stay in front of guys as well as Tony Allen as long as you use him.

However team defense was nowhere to be found unless you play with buddies on your same team who know what they're doing.

Re: Gamesradar Preview

You can shield the ball and attempt to draw the foul?? Hope he isn't mistaking this for something else.

Good preview. The game seems solid. Just improving the mechanism and small things in 2k13 makes sense.

The auto contest was when you went in for a layup - defense mugged you, your player got stuck into a ridiculous layup animation which was guaranteed to miss and there was no foul called.
That is what he means when he says "defense is not as dominant this year."
