Re: NBA 2K13 Roster Update Details (3-16-13)

Even though I don't like how Rashidi voices his opinion on 2ks roster updates, he makes good points in his blog and the summary of the state of rosters after the last update is pretty pathetic:

Player Edits: 6 (in 14 days)
Missing Players: 15
Missing Coaches: 1
Players on Wrong Teams: 6
Incorrect Lineups: 6

Keep in mind this is done by the "insider" (shouldn't this label imply competence?) and his "team"...now there are lots of issues that are probably much harder to fix than I think, so criticism might be exaggerated at times. But we're talking about the most basic part of the game, which is putting the right 12 to 15 players on every team and give them accurate stats.

I don't care that much about the Cavs, but this is a joke...

Tristan Thompson 13.4 ORB% (career 13.8) = 86 rating
Dwight Howard 10.7 ORB% (career 12.0) = 95 rating

With the worst offensive rebounding performance of his whole carreer, Howard gets a 95, even though Thompson is just as good as prime Dwight in this regard.
Now what will change with 2k14? They are "listening to the community"...so will we have twitter discussions with the "insider" whether Thompson "deserves an upgrade"? There are things you can't have a discussion about.

Maybe Dwight is a better rebounder because he grabs all the invisible ones we can't track with stats, otherwise the game reflects players in a way not true to the real world. Which is not what I expect from a licenced NBA "simulation".

I don't think hearing the community is a good thing.

I think the biggest part of the community are just homers that want their best players to end up with 99 in every category. People on this forum represent a minority.

Just gotta have someone at the Insider spot that knows his job, knows basketball, watch every team play and NEVER actually listen to the community.

They don't need the community insight. Just look at the ****ing stats, numbers don't lie.

Roy Hibbert got defensive anchor & Larry Sanders still doesnt have it. Lets be real, Larry is a game changer on D, leads the nba in almost every defensive stat (for centers) blocks (leads nba), post defence, defending the pick & roll,iso,#1 in affecting shots at the rim (meaning the 1s he doesnt block), overall just increadible defender, hes the #1 rated defensive Center (IRL) this yr & the Bucks play better D when hes on thr floor.

Not saying Roy doesnt deserve it, just saying Larry does as well.

I agree, and it really shows that "making paying customers happy" might be the exact opposite of "recreating the real NBA" in many ways. A lot of people are absolutely clueless, but since they've paid money for 2k13, their voice needs to be heard, too. Even though their ideas about players make no sense at all.
2k has a fanbase that spends money on their products, so to mak them happy, 2k needs to put their ideas in front of accuracy and realism.

That's just the way it is. Many people love the way sig skills are used right now and simply don't care that a lot of that stuff is unrealistic and gimmicky. To be successful, 2k absolutely has to dumb down the game.
Just look at bball forums, it's funny how clueles many fans are...

Dirk gets hated on for being a bad rebounder even though he's averaging something like 25/10 in the playoffs....
Kobe becomes "da clutch gawd", and 2k adds the closer skill which gives a player special powers in the 4th quarter ingnoring everything we know about real life performance...
My point is...that's the way the masses think about basketball. And they pay for 2k13 the same way I did. So even though I have to shake my head a lot, they deserve the same attention as sim gamers do.

In the end, 2ks games do not reflect reality, but the way people willing to buy the game perceive reality. So if this target group is defined by big market bias, superstar fandom and igorance of anything related to stats and tactics, the game will reflect just that. So I don't buy into any talk about "we hear the community" and "great things to come", simply because it makes no sense from a business point of view.
Good luck with telling your execs that ratings and tendencies will be based on synergy and hoopdata for 2k14, if adding hiphop all star teams and wristbands for MyPlayer make more fans happy than trying to simulate real basketball.

Won't happen. Either EA releases a game carving a niche comparable to SEGAs Fooball Manager series, aimed at a more mature audience, or we will be stuck with a casual arcade game made by 2k for years to come.

You know what's even funnier some people on this forum will swear otherwise.

Agree with most of what you said (except the idea of 'watching every game; I doubt anyone could/would do that), and would believe/hope that the 'Insider(s)' would be a mostly objective collective that monitors all teams equally.

As you stated, the problem with 'the community' and the resulting updates is that the most vocal groups are getting what they want and the rest are just arguing to make certain teams/players better; rather than the lowering or balancing of players and teams to create a realistic game.

Two points constantly brought up highlight this issue. The first is the 'Melo Argument'. I'm pretty tired of hearing, "when will Melo get his 92 rating back?" What does this mean? Is he entitled to this rating? Is 2K somehow punishing him by taking something from his rating which will be restored at a later date? With this line of thinking, Lebron is now entitled to be a 99 for many years to come. The second issue is the suggestions (and accompanying thread) regarding Signature Skills. I am under the belief that these are given to players percieved to have a special ability. and/or influence the game in a way few others can. I haven't read the entire thread, but if it sounds anything like the norm around here, I would guess that if the Insider listened to the suggestions, the game would play like NBA Jam. A Signature Skill should not be awarded simply because of a highlight on ESPN, but as a result of prolonged performance.
