Except, that's not exactly true.

The overall rating is a reflection of a player's all-around game and abilities, including offense, defense, athleticism, intangibles, etc. If we look at player A and can easily determine that their overall game (weighing all their various ratings) is clearly better than the overall offense/defense/athleticism/intangibles of player B who plays the same position, then the overall rating should reflect that. That's why LeBron clearly has the highest overall rating of today's players; not because he is the best shooter or the best defender, but because when you weigh all his various ratings, he is clearly, overall, better. That's why it is dumbfounding when certain players are clearly better OVERALL, yet have lower overall ratings.

I can understand how someone's athleticism might spike their overall rating compared to a similar player who isn't as fast or doesn't dunk as well. Sure, that's going to bump someone's overall up a little. But many of the rating disparities seem off even when taking those things into account (ie Dwight Howard compared to the best centers of all-time, or Melo compared to other superstars with more dimensions to their game, or Bosh compared to Amare or Hibbert.)

And, in the end, it is a reflection of their individual ratings, it affects Association logic and cannot be adjusted for online play, so it does matter.

In the future, 2K should just give us an option to change the overall number without touching any of the attribute ratings. I think this would solve a lot of problems - no?

I agree, some people say the overall has no effect on the game but that is really only true in quick game..

Or just change it to where there is no overalls.. Give everybody A,B,C grades and to pick their playing status- starter, 6th man, role-player, etc... As of right now you could change a player with a 50 overall to "star player" or whatever it is and he would still be shoved to the very end of the rotation simply because of his overall..

Serge Ibaka should not be just 81, it's because of the defensive player of the year and his performance in the olympics. The Rating for Roy Hibbert is ridiculous, he's even cannot be compared to skills of Serge Ibaka. Example is when Serge Ibaka got 11/11 field goal against Spurs last season, Roy Hibbert never done that in his entire career. Don't be mad at me Hibbert fans.

As long as the players play like the players in real life. I don't care lol. But I love watching the back and forth between some people every year haha. It's soooo funny.

And to add liter fulid to the flame. Kevin Durant hasn't done much to get rated over 94. You can only boosting his shooting/scoring ratings so high. He's still needs to improve his rebounding and make more plays on defense (not that he doesn't play good defense or not).

This season should be fun for Durant.

Serge Ibaka is athletic and a great shot blocker, but come on, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Sure, Hibbert's rating needs to go down (and probably will by release), but Serge averaged only 9 pts and 7.5 rebs per game. You should feel fortunate he got as high as an 81 overall.

What Serge's rating does solidify, though, is that Tyson Chandler is grossly underrated at 79 and better go up by release. Tyson won defensive player of the year and has better pts, rebs, % than Serge. I'm not a Knicks fan, but it seems a no-brainer.

The reason Hibbert has a higher overall rating is because he is more of a two-way player than Ibaka.

Don't forget about how important BOTH offensive and defensive awareness are in determining a player's overall rating. Despite having a great defensive awareness rating, Ibaka's offensive awareness rating will likely be much lower than Hibbert's.

That's why Hibbert is rated higher... he'll have a higher combined overall awareness than Ibaka.
