It's a video game, I really don't even notice those things. I'm old school though, as long as the game is fun none of that stuff matters to me. I wonder what you would have thought of Madden 94 and the like.

This is gospel. Five QBs above 95 To me the highest rated QB would be a 96, these are like Montana and Marino ratings All time ratings. It's just too way Subjective to be locked down.

I'm sorry but in that meeting where the team decided that it was okay to remove the ability to edit ratings, they should have released a poll listing why the change would be needed, and ask the consumers whether or not they'd be willing to suffer through that, or wait another year for CCM.
If the hadn't taken out any other feature this alone would be a dealbreaker for me I could not start a Franchise, CCM or whatever you want to call it with without being able to fix this, this would bug me to no end everytime something happened I would wonder is because of the rating that someone decided for my 'chise experience even worse fan voted on. We have been abile to fix this since for the last 15 years in Season modes. I just can't take a step back like that.

Dude, it's 2012, and sports games are being critically acclaimed for their realism because video games have advanced enough to look and play pretty realistically. I mean compare M12 to MLB the Show 12 and NBA 2K12 and see how Madden fairs. I'm really not being nitpicky like you think I am. By the way. Madden 94 was released for what, the Super Nintendo or something?

Flash forward, and some people find Madden frustrating and boring to play, and many people criticize the game for not being what EA constantly describes it as:

"The most Authentic NFL game"
"True to the NFL"
"What you see on Sundays"

The "fun" part of the game is nice and all, and it can still be achieved through realism. Times are changing. I don't want a game that looks like crap and plays like crap, because that wouldn't be fun. We still have arcade style games anyways. Hell, what am I saying, Madden pretty much is EA's own arcade version of the NFL.

edit:

I mean, if you look at it, Romo killed it last year. In past Maddens, he'd probably get a 94-95 OVR with that performance. But this year, he's only a 90. So I don't think the ratings are overdone at all from what I'm seeing.
The thing that bothers me with the spread is that there is not a big difference between the 1st tier elite QBs and the 2nd tier very goog QBs. There is a much larger difference in the skill between Eli and Brees than 1 OVR. If Brees and Brady are 98, then Eli, Ben, and Romo should all be around a 92, still very good, but far enough away from the elite players that there is a noticable difference in who is good and who is great
