If this is all that comes out today (which it may not be), they're going to get some backlash from this. If they had just said, "We'll be making an exciting announcement about NCAA 12 tomorrow on First Take," everything would have been just fine. But when you hype it to be some kind of ground-breaking, "huge" event, and all it is is another marketing ploy, it doesn't help your image in the eyes of those who already think EA is more interested in making money than creating a simulation football game. Even if that is the case, you don't want people to think that about your company. Very disappointing, again, if this is all that comes out today.

This doesn't mean they might not have a lot of great things in store for NCAA 12; however, there are people who are a lot harder on EA than I am, and even I'm pretty let down and find myself scratching my head about how they handled this announcement. I can just imagine what those other people think.
Agreed, well said

scroll down the website page & look at the teambuilder pic. air force running the air raid, akron running the option? akron is highlighted. it says use this as your base playbook. maybe this is a sign of custom playbooks... hmmm sneaky, sneaky EA.

Why are people so surprised this was the huge news? This happens every... single... year. EA always opens with some marketing ploy to get the attention of casual fans who wouldn't normally be interested in the product. They know all the diehards are eagerly waiting to analyze and dissect every article and picture we find.

The fact that they hyped it as big news should've made it obvious it wasn't for us, since any and all new revelations about the actual game is big news. We got four months to go and this is how EA rolls; pace yourselves.

But it's how EA presented this that's so perplexing. It's not the information itself (it's around the time they always announce the cover athlete and as you said there's a long time for them to disclose the new additions to the game), it's the fact that they made a statement about having "huge news" on NCAA 12. Well, considering the cover athlete happens every year, it was easy to assume that EA wouldn't make this big a fuss unless they really had something big to announce.

I don't quite know how EA coming out and saying "we have a HUGE announcement to make" over their twitter account would make it "obvious" that this "wasn't for us." Wouldn't you classify the people that follow the twitter account of a video game as probably being the more hardcore variety? All they had to do was release something like, "Tune in to First Take for the first announcement of the year for NCAA 12," or, "Who's going to grace the cover of NCAA 12? Tune in to First Take to find out." Both of those statements create interest, but a reasonable amount of interest given the announcement. In my opinion, EA's wording was far too strong and overblown for something that, as you said, happens "every... single... year." Because of this, it was easy for people to get the wrong idea and therefore feel a sense of disappointment at the announcement.

So, just to sum up my point, had they just come out and announced the cover athlete competition today, I have a feeling everyone would have been fine with it (at least any rational person). That's typically the kind of information we get so early in the year. Pretty routine. However, because EA alluded to some kind of "huge" announcement, there are people who were expecting something more and are let down by the news today.

Ultimately, none of this will matter once the blogs get going and we start getting a steady flow of information about the game. But as of today, I can't help but think that EA dropped the ball a bit.

I agree 100% but at the same time I know EA and their track record with overhyping the mundane. I watched EA(/Bioware) hype the release date of additional beta keys for a Facebook game (go ahead and read that again) over on the DA2 board. So I guess I'm just used to EA's marketing and know not to get the slightest bit excited until I actually see the info.
