Re: MLB 2K11 Demo Available Now, Post Your Impressions Here (PS3/360)

Okay, played one game of the demo and am watching another CPU vs. CPU (PS3 version):

+ Pitch sequences seem a lot more realistic, and I was actually walked on 4 pitches. Although I didn't spend much time playing on Pro in 2k10, I don't recall that happening ever. With more pitches outside the zone and on corners, it means more foul tips and extended at-bats.

+ Post play scenes have been extended back to the length they were in 2k9, which is a big plus for me. I hated having every scene cut off by that screen wipe last year. This is shown best at the plate because you can see the sig animations in all their glory, but it does have one negative effect that I'll touch on in a bit...

+ Had a fairly easy grounder to Freddy Sanchez that he absolutely butchered. Didn't come up with it cleanly at first and then stumbled around a bit trying to scoop it up. Never would have had a chance to throw the guy out.

+ The Bad Matchup thing is interesting - obviously it's a hitting penalty for certain batters against good pitchers, but I don't really know enough about it yet.

+ The fielding animations in general are just so much cleaner this year. I haven't seen any of the wonky animations I've seen in years past yet.

+ This one's in-progress, but the CPU vs CPU game at the plate seems to resemble actual baseball more than it ever has. Walks, Fouls, extended at-bats, everything. CPU seems more patient this year with stuff that isn't right down the middle.

- I realize it's a demo, but this game and series absolutely thrives on MLB Today and its commentary. To not include it seems like a pretty big oversight.

- Lots of what I would call "dead air" during the post-play scenes where a player just stands around doing nothing. Especially noticeable when it's a pitcher. Could be a demo issue, with perhaps all of the final's animations not making it in - we'll see.

- Again, could just be the demo, but even I, someone who played High Heat Baseball with its less than mediocre graphics for years, think this is below par for the PS3.

- I smashed an opposite field HR into the cove....and you could hear a pin drop. Almost no emotion, either from the atmosphere or the players themselves. Also saw one nasty animation botch when he crossed the plate - the catcher was down in his crouch and the runner who had just scored trotted into his path, forcing the catcher to slide along the ground, without the animation moving even an inch.

As you can probably tell, most of my gripes were non-gameplay related - I was impressed by how much it felt like baseball.

Something I'm wondering about in regards to crowd noise.
I'm pretty sure last year that there were sliders for all types of noise, including crowd volume.

Is it possible that the default for this is very low? Idk, just something I thought about with people saying they thought the crowd wasn't into the game..

I will say, I enjoyed Last years game, and they fixed and improved the game, that's all that matters to me. Some of you guys are harsh on the graphics, I think the game looks good. I'm happy with what I see. From last year, 2k presentaion is unmatched IMO.

For a demo it was pretty darn good. The graphics were not the best I have seen, but by no means terrible (on a 52" HDTV). I agree with most , love the camera angle. Definitely like the feilding aspect of the game also. I havent played this game since 2k7 so the pitching was different, but I will figure it out. Hitting was fun also.

I already know the commentary is top notch, so when the slider guru's get their hands on it this will be a fun experience.

The 2 things I like the most are:

1. all the stat overlays

2. Change, I think this game will be more immersive than routine.

By the way what is a framerate? I read this word every 3rd or 4th post. If it means running smooth, well it ran smooth for me.

I dont know if anyone has run into this problem so far but it's happened 3 times in the past 4 games to me so I figured I'd share. I'm playing with Texas and Adrian Beltre is at the plate. I hit a bomb to center and the ball goes over the wall but the centerfielder catches it. Its called a home run AND an out! I hope that doesn't happen in the real game! Another negative I saw was how players run the bases. It looks...robotic and ugly. Round the bases and run through the bag once in a while please!

Well I just played my first game and like most of you guys I am quite impressed. I won 2-0 behind Sanchez and a 2-run homer from Huff in the first. The only thing that was odd was that Torres was on second when the homer was hit but when the ball was put in play I couldn't move him at all. It's like he was frozen and the game knew it was homer thus not letting me manually advance as I waited it out since the camera seemed to be like any deep fly ball.

Oh and anyone who is seriously angry about the framerate drop on fouls and pop-ups really needs to find something legit to complain about. Yes it's inexcusable that it happens, but it has no bearing on anything in the grand scheme of things. I really didn't want to buy both games again this year since I have both systems and was looking hard for a reason to not want this, but damn if 2K didn't just convince me otherwise.

Because Huff has no signature style stance in the game and Garciaparra's stance is the closest to Huff's in the game.
